The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has developed the PRObability of Streamflow PERmanence (PROSPER) model, a GIS raster-based empirical model that provides streamflow permanence probabilities (probabilistic predictions) of a stream channel having year-round flow for any unregulated and minimally-impaired stream channel in the Pacific Northwest region, U.S. The model provides annual predictions for 2004-2016 at a 30-m spatial resolution based on monthly or annually updated values of climatic conditions and static physiographic variables associated with the upstream basin (Raw streamflow permanence probability rasters). Predictions correspond to pixels on the channel network consistent with the medium resolution National...
Climate summary variables reconstructed in high resolution for past and projected futures. We took detailed microclimate measurements across three mountain ranges in West Texas to identify key topographical drivers of microclimate variation, and modeled future fine scale climate as a function of topography and projected regional weather across multiple future scenarios.
Data presented are results of surveys and monitoring for San Diego Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) in southern San Diego County. These data were collected to assess Cactus Wren population status following 3 years of drought and determine the relationships between specific elements of habitat quality, food availability, and Cactus Wren productivity and survival. Surveys were conducted periodically at 35 plots that were last surveyed in 2012. A subset of Cactus Wren territories were monitored in the Otay and Sweetwater/San Diego genetic clusters to ascertain Cactus Wren breeding productivity, survival, and associated vegetation composition and structure. Nesting data were compiled to present seasonal...
Surface water quality, water isotope, and phytoplankton enumeration data were collected to evaluate the impact of an Emergency Drought Barrier (EDB) in False River in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected on six days during 2022 and 2023 (June 7, June 21, July 27, August 9, October 12, November 30, 2022, and February 21, 2023). Sampling occurred in Franks Tract, Mildred Island, the San Joaquin River, and various sloughs and cuts connecting these water bodies. High-resolution boat-based mapping data and discrete water samples were collected and analyzed for: nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus (orthophosphate), total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, total phosphorus,...
These raster and tabular data were compiled to develop time series data of the lower Colorado River (LCR) vegetation greenness, water use, and phenology since the year 2000. An objective of our study was to evaluate short and long-term effects of drought and biocontrol on LCR riparian and aquatic ecosystems south of Hoover Dam. These data represent spatially explicit average Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI2) derived evapotranspiration (ET) difference, and scaled normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI*) difference maps between two decades (2000 to 2010 and 2011 to 2020) and two 5 year periods (2000 to 2005 and 2016 to 2020). The time-series period statistics data provide estimates of the riparian woodland area...
The impacts of climate change on cold water species will likely manifest in populations at the trailing edge of their distribution. Rio Grande cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii virginalis, RGCT) occupy arid southwestern U.S.A. streams at the southern-most edge of all cutthroat trout distributions; thus making RGCT particularly vulnerable to the anticipated warming and drying in this region. However, RGCT may possess a portfolio of life-history traits that aide in their persistence, attributes commonly observed in trailing edge populations. We used stream discharge (flow) data collected along a temperature and stream drying gradient to determine how these environmental constraints influence life-history trait...
Plant-mediated processes are often important in determining carbon cycling and storage in ecosystems. With climate-induced changes in the environment, plant-associated processes may also shift. Salt marshes in particular are useful systems to investigate plant-mediated carbon cycling, as these systems experience both sea-level rise and increased carbon dioxide concentrations due to climate change, in addition to stochastically experiencing extreme drought and flood conditions. We measured biomass, soil, and gas carbon pools and the fluxes between those pools using a mesocosm approach in a salt marsh system, to investigate the response of plant-mediated carbon cycling to near-term climate change.

We developed an improved approach to the parameterization of the Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model using the Forcing and Normalizing Operation (FANO). The FANO parameterization was implemented on two computing platforms using Landsat and gridded meteorological datasets: 1) Google Earth Engine (GEE) and 2) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center Science Processing Architecture (ESPA). Evaluation was conducted by comparing modeled actual evapotranspiration (ETa) estimates with AmeriFlux Eddy Covariance (EC) and water balance ETa from level-8 Hydrologic Unit Code sub-basins in the conterminous United States for five water-years (Oct-Sep; 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2018). USGS Evapotranspiration...
These data are meant to support a publication "Disentangling direct and indirect effects of extreme events on coastal wetland communities" in the Journal of Animal Ecology. This dataset contains both amphibian and fish observations based on our use of plastic minnow traps. Additionally we present (specific) conductance values observed during our trapping periods.

This folder and its contents include summaries produced from fish and habitat surveys conducted in Mason Creek, tributary of the East Fork Lewis River, SW Washington, during summer of 2017. First, estimates of abundance and survival for juvenile coho salmon were generated for three time periods (early, middle, and late) during the summer of 2017 and reported in the file "Estimates of juvenile coho summer abundance and survival_MasonCreek_2017.xlsx". Second, summaries of the continuous habitat surveys can be found in the file "FinalStats_MasonMill2017_FishRescue.xlsx". Specifically here, the total length of stream habitat by habitat type (flowing, fragmented, dry) and the frequency and area of stream pools are summarized...
These average EVI2 derived evapotranspiration (ET) raster data were compiled to develop time series data of the lower Colorado River (LCR) vegetation greenness and water use since the year 2000. An objective of our study was to evaluate short and long-term effects of drought and biocontrol on LCR riparian and aquatic ecosystems south of Hoover Dam. These data were compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and University of Arizona, to monitor riparian zone trends and changes...
Wildfire events are becoming more frequent and severe on a global scale. Rising temperatures, prolonged drought, and the presence of pyrophytic invasive grasses are contributing to the degradation of native vegetation communities. Within the Great Basin region of the Western United States, increasing wildfire frequency is transforming the ecosystem toward a higher degree of homogeneity, one dominated by invasive annual grasses and declining landscape productivity. Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter sage-grouse) are a species of conservation concern that rely on large tracts of structurally and functionally diverse sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) communities. Using a 12-year (2008-2019) telemetry...
This dataset includes stable carbon isotope values, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose concentrations (expressed as percent of ash-free dry mass) for riparian cottonwood (Populus deltoides) tree rings growing on the Little Missouri River floodplain, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota. Drought stress induces stomatal closure and the carbon isotope ratio of annual tree rings tends to be negatively correlated with water availability, especially in dry environments. However, lignin and hemicellulose can obscure annual trends in carbon isotope compositions as these wood components can differ in δ13C relative to pure cellulose. We measured δ13C of whole wood in annual tree rings from seven trees with oldest...
The Management Options Database synthesizes and documents a comprehensive set of management practices implemented by the water managers on behalf of a collective (e.g., municipal water systems, irrigation districts) or as individuals (e.g., farmers) to adapt to drought conditions in the Rio Grande/Río Bravo basin. This database provides input to implement the policies in the agent-based module of the ENVISION RGB integrated model (i.e., the range of possible decisions the agents can make in the model) and explore new scenarios of water management. It was developed drawing on the ethnographic data collected by the ethnographic team (Friedman, Paladino). Regular meetings were facilitated by the modeling team (Koch,...

Streamflow Permanence Class (SPC) rasters represent the classification of the raw streamflow permanence probabilities produced by the PRObability of Streamflow PERmanence (PROSPER) model into categorical wet and dry classes, annually for years 2004 through 2016, and overall mean. Raw probabilities were classified into a -5 (dry) to +5 (wet) scale based on the spatially variable threshold (i.e., value that predicts the wet/dry break point) and confidence interval rasters. In general, the farther a raw probability value is from the threshold value for a given pixel, the farther the categorical value is from zero for that pixel. For example, a raw probability that is less than the threshold value minus the critical...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated water use for the United States every 5 years since 1950. Estimates are provided for groundwater and surface-water sources, for fresh and saline water quality, and by sector or category of use. Estimates have been made at the State level since 1950, and at the county level since 1985. Water-use estimates by watershed were made from 1950 through 1995, first at the water-resources region level (HUC2), and later at the hydrologic cataloging unit level (HUC8). Understanding streamflow dynamics, watershed systems, and their relation to terrain characteristics is essential for describing and planning water supply, water use, and related land use activities. With data from...

Integrating spatially explicit biogeophysical and remotely sensed data into regression-tree models enables the spatial extrapolation of training data over large geographic spaces, enhancing a more complete understanding of broad-scale ecosystem processes. This data release presents maps of estimates of annual gross primary production (GPP) and annual ecosystem respiration (RE) that were derived from weekly summaries of gross photosynthesis (Pg) and ecosytem respiration (Re). To conduct this study we used carbon data from flux towers that are scattered strategically across the conterminous United States (CONUS). We also calculate and present a map of average annual net ecosystem production (NEP). We present and analyze...
This dataset is a shapefile that contains the grid outlines and identifiers for the tiles produced by the TopoWx ("Topographical Weather/Climate") temperature dataset as applied to the USGS North Central Climate Center Domain and the surrounding area of Montana. The TopoWx dataset contains gridded daily temperature and is an interpolated spatio-temporaldataset in the same vein as the well-known PRISM (http://www.prism.oregonstate.edu) and Daymet products (http://daymet.ornl.gov). Daily Tmin and Tmax are provided at a 30-arcsec resolution (~800m) from 1948-2012 along with the latest 30-year monthly normals (1981-2010). The goals of the TopoWx project were to produce a dataset that: (1) incorporates key landscape-scale...

The overarching goal of this research was to use site-specific data to develop local and regionally-applicable climate change models that inform management of tidal wetlands along the Pacific Northwest coast. The overarching questions were: (1) how do tidal marsh site characteristics vary across estuaries, and (2) does tidal marsh susceptibility to sea-level rise (SLR) vary along a latitudinal gradient and between estuaries? These questions are addressed in this data collection with three specific objectives: (1) measure topographical and ecological characteristics (e.g., elevation, tidal range, vegetation composition) for tidal marsh and intertidal mudflats, (2) model SLR vulnerability of these habitats, and (3)...
