Summary

This dataset contains landcover classes for Laysan Island based on a satellite image taken by DigitalGlobe, Inc. on May 18, 2010. Landcover was classified into 15 different categories, categories determined by how avifauna use these categories for habitat, nesting and foraging.

Purpose

These data were collected as part of a large research project that examined the impacts of climate change, sea-level rise, storm waves, and tsunamis on avifauna and their habitat in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Collected data included a wide range of physical data (coastlines, digital elevation models, bathymetry, predicted wave run-up from storm waves, tsunami high water marks), habitat data (land cover classifications, vegetation maps and monitoring plots), and biological survey data (bird abundance and density, nest census, and habitat surveys). The primary purpose of creating this landcover dataset was to quantify the effects of inundation on bird habitat. As part of the overall project we examined the extent of inundation from passive sea-level rise, wave-driven inundation, and a tsunami event on March 11, 2011. While some avifauna species have available nest distribution data, other species do not. Consequently, for these species lacking spatial nest distribution data, we used specific landcover classes as a proxy for nesting habitat and a means to estimate habitat inundation.
