Summary

Zircon (ZrSiO4) and cassiterite (SnO2) samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from the Yazov Granite, Transbaikalia region, Eastern Siberia, Russia. Samples (in the form of mounted loose grains) were prepared and analyzed for direct age dating on a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA–ICPMS) system at the USGS in Denver, Colorado from February 2017 to June 2019. The data indicate that high tin concentrations in the Yazov Granite are caused by inheritance of older cassiterite crystals and may imply that these granites cannot be genetically related to primary tin ore deposits of the region. Purpose

The data present the first comparative LA-ICPMS U−Pb dating results for zircon and cassiterite and discuss the preservation of inherited Paleoproterozoic accessory cassiterite within the Neoproterozoic magma of the Yazov granites (Transbaikalia region, Eastern Siberia, Russia). The data set were also obtained to further demonstrate the practical application of the LA–ICPMS analytical procedure for U-Pb dating of cassiterite (SnO2) without reliance on an independently dated matrix-matched cassiterite reference material that was characterized by other (“higher precision”) techniques such as isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID–TIMS). This data release accompanies the planned publication, 'LA–ICPMS U-Pb Dating Reveals Cassiterite Inheritance in the Yazov Granite, Eastern Siberia: Implications for Tin Mineralization'. The manuscript constrains the timing of zircon and cassiterite mineralization in the Yazov Granite.
