Summary
Two-dimensional variably saturated heat and flow models (VS2DH) were used to examine seepage rates along the Birdspring drainage for the purpose of exploring the drainage channel for use in an managed aquifer recharge project. Six transect models were separately calibrated to sediment temperatures observed during episodic runoff events during water year 2017 and 2018. The models were calibrated to unsteady flow conditions, then estimates of seepage losses were made for steady state conditions assuming stage conditions associated with 4 cubic feet per second of imported water. This USGS data release contains all of the input and output files for the simulations described in the associated model documentation report (larger work).

In general, managed aquifer recharge projects that rely on spreading basins or natural channels to infiltrate and recharge aquifers must identify infiltration characteristics of site conditions. Because hydraulic properties in alluvial sediments are spatially variable, characterization of site conditions should occur across multiple scales. The approach taken for this effort used natural runoff events to estimate hydraulic properties and seepage rates. Data were collected at 10 minute intervals during the winter-spring runoff periods along six transect locations over a 3 mile length of channel. The development of the model inputs and output files included in this data release are documented in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2021-5137.
