Summary

The Ouachita Mountains record the late Paleozoic Laurentia-Gondwana orogenic event along southern Paleo-North America during Pangea supercontinent formation. This data release contains a digital compilation of geomorphic-structural information from the Ouachita Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma and southwestern Arkansas as previously published by Arbenz (2008). The geodatabase, presented herein, contains feature classes that include contact, fault, fold, and cross section lines with map unit polygons characterized by predominantly siliciclastic material with primarily Paleozoic depositional ages. Spatial data are also disseminated as shapefiles, accompanied by applicable non-spatial tables detailing the data sources, glossary of terms, [...]

Purpose

A seamless, integrated, national-scale, two-dimensional geospatial map or three-dimensional geologic model does not exist for the United States. Therefore, the National Geologic Synthesis (NGS), through the United States GeoFramework Initiative (USGI) of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP), was directed to assemble and develop a unified geologic-framework product through a partnership between federal and state entities. This data, derived from previous reports and relevant publications through the Oklahoma Geological Survey, provide a fundamental starting point toward accomplishing this congressional mandate. The intended use of this dataset include, but are not limited to, research endeavors related to societal needs through land management, resource assessment, hydrological and ecological protection, infrastructure development, and natural resource mitigation; in addition to scientific studies concerning basin analysis, and paleogeographic and paleotectonic models.
