The Alaska Geochemical Database Version 3.0 (AGDB3) contains new geochemical data compilations in which each geologic material sample has one best value determination for each analyzed species, greatly improving speed and efficiency of use. Like the Alaska Geochemical Database Version 2.0 before it, the AGDB3 was created and designed to compile and integrate geochemical data from Alaska to facilitate geologic mapping, petrologic studies, mineral resource assessments, definition of geochemical baseline values and statistics, element concentrations and associations, environmental impact assessments, and studies in public health associated with geology. This relational database, created from databases and published...

The titanium concentrations were obtained from a data set that is called the "National Geochemical Survey." This data set, as well as its documentation, are available in U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2004-1001 (https://mrdata.usgs.gov/geochem/doc/home.htm). The titanium concentrations were measured in 3,457 samples of stream sediments from the coastal plain of the southeastern United States; this area includes parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. The samples were collected between 1975 and 1999 during several field surveys, and the concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry.

The Archean Stillwater Complex, a layered ultramafic-to-mafic intrusion, is exposed along the northern side of the Beartooth Mountains in Montana. To the north of the Stillwater outcrops, a gravity anomaly is located where Phanerozoic rocks may unconformably overlie the complex. These Phanerozoic rocks are intruded by Cretaceous plutons that have gabbroid inclusions that look like metamorphosed rocks of the Stillwater Complex. To determine the age of the inclusions, U-Pb isotopic data were collected on zircon in xenoliths from the Sliderock Mountain and Susie Peak plutons, Montana, using the sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe–reverse geometry (SHRIMP-RG) at Stanford University.

This data release compiles the whole-rock geochemistry, X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy analyses of samples collected from the uranium ore bodies of two mined-out deposits in the Grand Canyon region of northwestern Arizona—the Hack II and Pigeon deposits. The samples are grab samples of ore collected underground at each mine by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) during the mid-1980s, while each mine was active. The Hack II and Pigeon mines were remediated after their closure, so these data, analyses of samples in the archives of the USGS, are provided as surviving, although limited representations of these ore bodies. The Hack II and Pigeon deposits are similar to numerous other uranium deposits hosted...

There is a growing demand for commodities (elements, compounds, minerals) used in today's advanced technologies. Critical minerals are usually found in ore deposits that are deemed vital to economic and national security. The National Geochemical Database on Ore Deposits: Legacy data (NGDOD) contains chemistry and geologic information for nearly 30,000 historic ore and ore-related rock samples from mineral deposits and mining districts in the United States. Geochemical data sets from various mineral deposits were submitted by geologists of the "Systems Approach to Critical Minerals Inventory, Research, and Assessment" (SACM) within the U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Resource Program (MRP). The data sets represent...

The data release for the geologic map of the Salmon National Forest and vicinity, east-central Idaho, is a Geologic Map Schema (GeMS)-compliant version that updates the GIS files for the geologic map published in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geologic Investigations Series Map I-2765 (Evans and Green, 2003). The updated digital data present the attribute tables and geospatial features (points, lines and polygons) in the format that meets GeMS requirements. This data release presents the geologic map as shown on the plates and captured in geospatial data for the published map. Minor errors, such as mistakes in line decoration or differences between the digital data and the map image, are corrected in this version....

This dataset includes polygons that describe areas of rock outcrop in the area of the Stillwater Complex, Montana. The Stillwater Complex is an Archean, ultramafic to mafic layered intrusion exposed in the Beartooth Mountains in south-central Montana. This igneous intrusion contains magmatic mineralization that is variably enriched in strategic and critical commodities such as chromium, nickel, and the platinum-group elements (PGE). Polygons representing rock outcrops were digitized in a Geographic Information System (GIS) using georeferenced maps and orthophoto imagery from published reports and field mapping sheets. This is a compilation of both legacy data and outcrops from recent field mapping. This dataset...

This data release provides multi-element data for drill core samples from the Mesoproterozoic Nonesuch Formation and Copper Harbor Conglomerate at the Copperwood copper deposit, Michigan, USA. Gold, platinum, and palladium data were collected by fire assay; copper and silver were collected by assay; and other elements were collected by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) or inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) following a digestion that used hydrochloric, nitric, perchloric and hydrofluoric acids. The Copperwood copper deposit is a sediment-hosted stratiform copper deposit in the Presque Isle Syncline of the upper peninsula of Michigan. The deposit has a 2018 mineral...

This data release is a compilation of six earlier reports on natural occurrences of asbestos in the conterminous United States, which were published separately; these are Van Gosen (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010) and Van Gosen and Clinkenbeard (2011). The earlier reports were compilations divided by regions of the United States; in each report the data were provided in spreadsheet format. This data release combines the regional datasets into a single compilation for the entire conterminous United States, and includes shapefiles and spreadsheet formats. This data release provides site-by-site information on 876 natural occurrences of asbestos reported within the conterminous United States. This dataset allows the...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS), and Coal Creek Watershed Coalition (CCWC) working independently, have intermittently collected samples of surface- and groundwater and springs around Mount Emmons, near Crested Butte, Colorado. This data release is a compilation of the comprehensive inorganic chemical analyses conducted as a result of that sampling. The earliest samples were collected in the summer of 1997, and subsequent sampling has continued through 2019. Water samples collected in the Elk Creek basin, sample identifiers starting with EC, have been previously published in three U.S. Geological Survey reports; Verplanck and others, 2007, Manning and...

This data release provides the description of U.S. sites that include mineral regions, mines and mineral occurrences (deposits) that have a contained resource and (or) production of tellurium metal greater than 1 metric ton. For this data release, only one deposit in the U.S. with historic production records was found: Butte, Montana. We did not locate any deposits in the U.S. that list Te resources. Production facilities, such as the ASARCO LLC’s copper refinery in Amarillo, Texas are not included within this database. Tellurium is necessary for strategic, consumer, and commercial applications. The primary use for tellurium is for Cd-Te film solar cells. Other uses are as an alloying additive to steel to improve...

X-Ray diffraction (XRD) data for bulk sediment and clay separations taken from cores from Bristol Dry Lake, California and geothermal springs from Paoha Island (Mono Lake), California. The data were collected for two separate projects: (1) determining the source of lithium in Bristol Dry Lake (BDL), and (2) determining the mechanism of sinter formation on Paoha Island, Mono Lake. The data from BDL were collected in collaboration with Standard Lithium Ltd. who drilled 6 new proprietary wells in 2017 and 2018 on the playa. The wells were not cored, but cuttings were available for sampling a few months after the drilling was completed. The wells were up to 1500 feet deep. Cuttings were kept in the dark in sealed plastic...

Mining wastes can pose environmental hazards. These hazards can be mitigated by promoting the growth of native plants that can stabilize the mine wastes and potentially toxic elements in situ (i.e., phytostabilization). We grew a widespread perennial grass species (Bouteloua curtipendula) in dolomite amended polymetallic tailings from a historic mine in southeastern Arizona (USA). We applied a compost top dressing and an endophyte seed coating alone and in combination to quantify improvements in plant growth and potentially toxic trace element stabilization. This release provides the data on the following: temperature, light, and humidity during growth; plant growth rates and biomass yields; organic matter concentrations...

Stable isotope compositions (the ratios deuterium/hydrogen, oxygen-18/oxygen-16, and sulfur-34/sulfur-32) are reported for alunite, jarosite, kaolinite, silica, cinnabar, marcasite, and native sulfur from outcrops in and around the workings of the Sulphur Bank mercury mine, Lake County, California, and chemical compositions are reported, from electron microprobe analyses, for alunite and buddingtonite. Isotope analyses are given also for hydrogen sulfide gas from active fumaroles and for soluble sulfate in samples of mine waste. The waste results reflect fine grained material (particles less than 0.063 millimeter in diameter) that were taken from composites, each composite representing a particular waste pile that...

The Southern San Andreas fault (SSAF) poses one of the largest seismic risks in California. However, structural properties around Coachella Valley remain enigmatic. In 2019, we collected magnetotelluric soundings (MT) to help inform depth-dependent fault zone geometry, fluid content and porosity. This project was led by the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California San Diego in partnership with U.S. Geological Survey and funded in large part by the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC). The MT data were collected using Zonge International 32-bit ZEN data loggers with ANT-4 magnetic induction coils and Borin Ag-AgCl electrodes with 50 m dipoles. The ZEN was programmed to...
Average abundances of polar/subpolar planktic foraminiferal species n the North Atlantic for Nordic Sea ODP Sites 907 and 909 represent percentages when Nordic Sea water was warm enough to support foraminifera. N. atlantica relative abundances at very high northern latitudes (ODP Site 909) are lower than at subpolar latitudes because N. pachyderma (s) dominated these very cold waters during the Pliocene.
