This data release supports interpretations of field-observed root distributions within a shallow landslide headscarp (CB1) located below Mettman Ridge within the Oregon Coast Range, approximately 15 km northeast of Coos Bay, Oregon, USA. (Schmidt_2021_CB1_topo_far.png and Schmidt_2021_CB1_topo_close.png). Root species, diameter (greater than or equal to 1 mm), general orientation relative to the slide scarp, and depth below ground surface were characterized immediately following landsliding in response to large-magnitude precipitation in November 1996 which triggered thousands of landslides within the area (Montgomery and others, 2009). The enclosed data includes: (1) tests of root-thread failure as a function of...

This dataset comprises a vector shapefile of the Puerto Rico geologic map from Bawiec et al. (1999), clipped to study areas in the Lares, Utuado, and Naranjito municipalities, with a modified basal contact of the Tertiary Lares Limestone (Tla) re-mapped using a lidar-derived digital elevation model (DEM) (USGS, 2018). The limestone unit of interest forms a prominent break in slope with the underlying geologic units, and this break in slope was mapped as the Tla basal contact. Only the southern contact of the Tla unit was modified. This dataset includes photographic images of thin sections made from xenolith samples collected from the Sliderock Mountain and Susie Peak plutons, Montana, along with a shapefile representing the locations of the samples. The plutons are located north of the Stillwater Complex, Montana, which is exposed along the northern side of the Beartooth Mountains in Montana. To the north of the Stillwater Complex, a gravity anomaly is located where Phanerozoic rocks may unconformably overlie the complex. These Phanerozoic rocks are intruded by Cretaceous plutons that have gabbroid inclusions that resemble other metamorphosed rocks of the Stillwater Complex. Samples of the inclusions were collected, and thin sections were...

The "Li_Triangle_ARG_MRP_NMIC.gdb" geospatial database was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey for use in a geographic information system (GIS) to support mineral resource research and assessment of lithium resources in the Argentina portion of the central South American Lithium Triangle. The Lithium Triangle is host to significant amounts (nearly 60%) of the worlds known (identified) resources of lithium. Over 100 salars and lagunas, ranging in area from a few square kilometers (km2) to approximately 9,000 km2, are found within this region. The Lithium Triangle is approximately 400,000 km2 and encompasses about 150 internal drainage basins in northwestern Argentina, western Bolivia, northern Chile, and southern-most...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has collected or incorporated over 20,000 physical property measurements into an ASCII database. These data are primarily from the western U.S. and Alaska and are dominated by granitic rock samples from the Sierra Nevada (compiled by Sikora and others, 1991), but also include a range of other commonly found rocks types. The data include density, magnetic susceptibility, and in some cases, remanent magnetic properties. Density data for more recently collected samples include grain, dry-bulk, and saturated-bulk density measurements. Sample locations are in the North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27) and elevations are in the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD29). These physical...

This dataset consists of 16 repeated magnetotelluric (MT) stations collected on Mount Tongariro, New Zealand, before (2009) and after (2013) the 2012 eruption. The data were collected in same locations with similiar instruments. Preeruption and posteruption electromagnetic magnetotelluric measurements determine variation in subsurface electrical properties resulting from changes in magmatic system associated with the 2012 eruptive cycle.
This dataset includes photographic and micrographic images of thin sections of drill core from the Stillwater Complex, Montana, along with a shapefile representing the locations of the drill holes. The core was drilled in order to study contact-type copper and nickel sulfide mineralization in the Stillwater Complex. See data release https://doi.org/10.5066/p9w5kp8u for accompanying drill log data. The images of the entire thin section, both in plane- and cross-polarized light, were taken using a high-resolution digital camera on a macro stand. The 4x and 10x resolution images were taken on an Olympus petrographic microscope using Stream Image Analysis Software. Each zip file, named with the drill hole identification...

Topography provides information about the structural controls of the Great Basin and therefore information that may be used to identify favorable structural settings for geothermal systems. Specifically, local relative topography gives information about locations of faults and fault intersections relative to mountains, valleys, or at the transitions between. As part of U.S. Geological Survey efforts to engineer features that are useful for predicting geothermal resources, we construct a detrended elevation map that emphasizes local relative topography and highlights features that geologists use for identifying geothermal systems (i.e., providing machine learning algorithms with features that may improve predictive...
