A reach of the North Santiam River, Oregon, was used as a case study in an ongoing effort to develop and test uncrewed aircraft system (UAS)-based salmon habitat mapping techniques using: (1) particle image velocimetry (PIV) for estimating surface flow velocities from remotely sensed data; and (2) two-dimensional (2D) flow modeling based on remotely sensed topography and bathymetry (topo-bathymetry). Direct measurements of flow velocity were obtained using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and used to assess the accuracy of the image-derived velocity estimates and modeled flow fields. Water depth was measured using a single beam echosounder and was used to calibrate and validate image-derived depth estimates...

Field measurements of water depth were acquired from a reach of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, WY, August 19-24, 2015, to support research on channel change along the Snake River and, more broadly, remote sensing of rivers. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the shallow channel margins and measuring the water depth directly on a top-setting wading rod used to collect flow velocity data with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). For the deeper areas representing most of the channel, depths were recorded along a series of cross-sections by a SonTek RiverSurveyor M9 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed from a kayak with the vertical beam of the...

Field spectra were collected from the Deschutes River near Bend, OR, July 26-28, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge. Reflectance measurements were made from a raft in the reach of the Deschutes River between Benham Falls and Dillon Falls using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in reflectance mode. The depth at each spectral measurement location was interpolated from field measurements of depth obtained with an echo sounder. This data release provides both the reflectance spectra and the interpolated depths and can be used to develop relationships between depth and reflectance for mapping river bathymetry from field spectra or passive optical remotely...

In 2021, the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) funded the collection of topo-bathymetric lidar (sometimes referred to as "green lidar") on the McKenzie River, Oregon. As part of this acquisition, lidar data were collected starting on the McKenzie River below Trail Bridge Reservoir and extending downstream roughly 125 km to its confluence with the Willamette River. Bathymetric lidar produced measurements of river bathymetry in areas of the McKenzie River channel that were generally less than 3 m in depth but did not produce measurements in deeper areas of the river. To fill the gaps in the topo-bathymetric lidar dataset (commonly referred to as "voids"), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funded USGS to collect boat-based...

A vertical profile of downwelling spectral irradiance at different depths within the water column was measured on the Deschutes River near Bend, OR, July 28, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge. Downwelling spectral irradiance data were collected using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in irradiance mode and deployed from a customized measurement crane. The measurements were made near a boat launch downstream of Benham Falls. In addition, the depth at which each downwelling spectral irradiance measurement was made was obtained using an Onset Hobo pressure transducer mounted next to the spectroradiometer foreoptic on the crane. This data release provides...

This model archive contains the data and software application used to develop a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of a 1.2 kilometer reach of the North Santiam River in Oregon. The Delft3D-Flexible Mesh modeling system was used to simulate flow conditions at a baseflow discharge of 25 cubic meters per second and thus provide spatially distributed predictions of depth and velocity throughout the reach. This model archive consists of four individual components: (1) information on the hydrodynamic model software application; (2) the topographic data used to construct the model grid and field measurements of water depth used to calibrate the model; (3) complete Delft3D model runs, including both the required inputs...

The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a bathymetric survey of a reach of the Deschutes River near Bend, OR, between Benham Falls and Dillon Falls on July 25, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge and characterization of habitat for amphibians, particularly the Oregon Spotted Frog (Rana pretiosa). The bathymetric survey data were obtained with an ITER Systems Bathyswath-1 468 kHz multi-beam echo sounder deployed from a customized research cataraft. The Bathyswath Swath Processor software package was used to acquire the raw data, which then were post-processed, filtered, and gridded using the Bathyswath Grid Processor program. The final output file included in this data release consists of...

Field spectra were collected from the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, WY, August 23, 2015, to support research on remote sensing of rivers. Reflectance measurements were made from a raft in the Swallow Bend reach of the Snake River using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in reflectance mode. The depth at each spectral measurement location was interpolated from field measurements of depth obtained with an acoustic Doppler current profiler. This data release provides both the reflectance spectra and the interpolated depths and can be used to develop relationships between depth and reflectance for mapping river bathymetry from field spectra or passive optical remotely sensed...

This data release includes cross section survey data collected during site visits to USGS gaging stations located throughout the Willamette and Delaware River Basins and multispectral images of these locations acquired as close in time as possible to the date of each site visit. In addition, MATLAB source code developed for the Bathymetric Mapping using Gage Records and Image Databases (BaMGRID) framework is also provided. The site visit data were obtained from the Aquarius Time Series database, part of the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS), using the Publish Application Programming Interface (API). More specifically, a custom MATLAB function was used to query the FieldVisitDataByLocationServiceRequest...
