We examined habitat use and foraging activity of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus), as well as nocturnal aerial insect abundance at Kaloko-Honōkohau National Historical Park located in the coastal region of Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i Island. The study area covers approximately 486 ha of marine waters and terrestrial coastal plains. Nocturnal aerial insect collection occurred in January and April (2 or 3 nights each) and in July and November (1 or 2 nights each) in 2014. Insects were collected at three stations (KAHO1, KAHO3, KAHO4) between 1 and 10 m above sea level. Nocturnal aerial insects were collected using a 22 W UV light placed above a funnel and bucket trap (Model #2851M, Bioquip Products...

This data release is comprised of a set of eight time travel map shapefiles (two tsunami inundation zones and four travel times) for use in GIS software applications and two population exposure by travel time tables (residents and nonresidences) for use in GIS software applications and other standalone spreadsheet applications. The travel time map was generated using the Pedestrian Evacuation Analyst model (version 1.0.1 for ArcGIS 10.5) from the USGS (https://geography.wr.usgs.gov/science/vulnerability/tools.html). The travel time analysis uses ESRI's Path Distance tool to find the shortest distance across a cost surface from any point in the hazard zone to a safe zone. This cost analysis considers the direction...

This data contains the height of shrubs found along transects on the south facing slopes of Santa Cruz Island, CA. It was used in the analysis for the Manuspcript "Long-term impacts of exotic grazer removal on native shrub recovery, Santa Cruz Island, California". These sites were sampled in 2004 and 2016 to gain a longer term view on native shrub reestablishment into exotic grasslands after exotic grazer removal.

This dataset (in ESRI file geodatabase format) contains inundation areas for various future scenarios of sea-level rise (SLR), groundwater rise, and storm waves at Midway Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Four types of inundation scenarios are considered: (1) passive SLR, (2) passive SLR including groundwater rise, (3) wave-driven inundation during storm events, and (4) wave-driven inundation during storm events including groundwater rise. For each of these four scenarios, five different levels of SLR are considered: 0.00 m, +0.50 m, +1.00 m, +1.50 m, and +2.00 m. We considered each scenario at mean high water in order to predict inundation during the more damaging part of the tidal range. Each of the...

This cost analysis considers the direction of movement and assigns a higher cost to steeper slopes, based on a table contained within the model. The analysis also adds in the energy costs of crossing different types of land cover, assuming that less energy is expended walking along a road than walking across a sandy beach. To produce the time map, the evacuation surface...

We quantified the availability of breeding habitat of the endangered Hawaii Akepa (Loxops coccineus). The species is thought to nest excusively in natural cavities within mature ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees but birds commonly occur in short stature trees that presumably do not have any natural cavities because of their polyploidal (many-branched) structure. To test this hypothesis we searched for cavities in trees where akepa forage and we measured diameter of each stem of each tree examined. The habitat is in montane areas of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Mauna Loa volcano. We surveyed 57 plots, 49 in montane woodland and 8 in closed-canopy forest. Six tree cavities were detected in the 214 sampled trees:...

The study area covers approximately 486 ha of marine waters and terrestrial coastal plains. Hawaiian hoary bat echolocation vocalizations were recorded at seven acoustic stations between 1 and 10 m above sea level, that operated nightly from November 2013 through February 2015. This data set includes data derived from these acoustic recording stations. Each acoustic recording station was comprised of an acoustic recording unit (SM2Bat+ Song Meter Digital...

We produced a series of maps of moist soil seed plants within managed wetlands in the Central Valley of California from 2007-2011 & 2013-2017. Moist soil seed plants, such as swamp timothy (Crypsis schoenoides) and watergrass (Echinochloa crusgallim), are a critical food source for migratory birds. Vegetation maps were created by classifying Landsat imagery from 2007-2011 and 2013-2017. A support vector machine learning classifier was trained using phenology metrics of moist soil seed plants, emergent vegetation, water, and other land cover observed via field surveys and high resolution imagery. Productivity maps of swamp timothy were based on a regression model of seed head weight with Landsat vegetation indices....

This dataset contains American Samoa resident count estimates as a function of travel time out of the 2009 and probable maximum tsunami (PMT) inundation zones for four different travel speeds (slow walk, fast walk, slow run, and fast run). The data are organized in a manner which permits summarizing or visualizing the data by village, tsunami-evacuation zone, and/or travel time, with individual rows representing the number of residents present in the specific village/evacuation zone/travel time combination. Due to the nature of the methodology used to distribute residential population to structures, resident numbers are not integers. These data, in tabular format, are intended for use in GIS software applications...

Moist soil seed plants, such as swamp timothy (Crypsis schoenoides) and watergrass (Echinochloa crusgallim), are a critical food source for migratory waterfowl. Through field observation and digitization of high resolution imagery we identified the locations of moist soil seed plants, tall emergent vegetation, water, and other land cover. Using a Support Vector Machine classification, we classified multispectral Landsat imagery from 2007-2011 and 2013-2017. We used images from May through August to create phenology metrics. The final datasets were used to train and test the...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 67 wells and 1 spring used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies in Placer, El Dorado, Amador, and Calaveras Counties, California in 2016-2017. The sites were sampled for the Mokelumne, Cosumnes, and American River Watersheds (MCAW) Shallow Aquifer Study Unit of the California State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. Domestic and small-system wells commonly are screened at shallower depths than public-supply wells. The MCAW study unit covered the...
