A laser rangefinder was used to record debris flows at Cascades volcanoes and an experimental debris flow flume. Mass movements such as large lahars and smaller seasonal debris flows can occur at volcanoes in the Cascades. A combination of seismic, infrasound, tripwires, and webcams can be used to detect and characterize these flows. A laser rangefinder can be placed on the banks of the drainages and pointed towards the channel as a low power, low bandwidth piece of equipment to confirm increases in flow past the station. This can serve as another piece of evidence for flows and may be able to be incoporated into future alarm systems to improve their accuracy and performance. A laser rangefinder was deployed for...

This data release includes the raw data and code used in Castro-Santos et al. (2024): Sprinting performance and behavior of adult shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum). Notably, the code includes several processes used to differentiate among attempts, quantify attempt rate, distance traversed, and endurance of shortnose sturgeon ascending a telemetered flume. The code can be readily adapted to other forms of telemetry analysis, in particulary with respect to processes associated with fish passage at barriers. Additional code is provided that quantifies kinematics variables recorded for the sturgeon as they swam at high speeds in the flume. The kinematics code was modified from Goerig et al (2021): https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.bg79cnp9x
The Yellowstone Plateau volcanic field and surrounding region is made up of over 3 billion years of geologic history, with 300+ separate rock types. To increase our understanding of the evolution of this active system and direct priorities for sample collection and field study, we compiled whole rock geochemical datasets from numerous thesis and papers (17 in total). We present these data in a standardized format and include location information and details on analytical methods when available.

This dataset contains a raster representing current (2017-2020) core sagebrush, growth opportunity areas, and other rangelands on tribal and federal lands that are estimated to be climate resilient into the future (2030-2060). We determined climate-resiliency by comparing current (2017-2020) core sagebrush, growth opportunity areas, and other rangelands to estimated future (2030-2060) conditions of core and growth opportunity areas under mid-century climate change (Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5) conditions (Doherty et al. 2022). The Department of the Interior (DOI) Sagebrush Keystone Initiative (KI) team worked with partners to identify areas within the sagebrush biome for strategic investments in conservation...

The Missouri Stream Conservation and Connectivity Prioritization Tool contains data tabulating costs to traverse between 10,357 origin and 50,135 destination stream reaches throughout the Central Plains and Ozarks aquatic subregions in Missouri. Below are links to data associated with the more northern drainages and also the southern drainages. These data are intended to be used in the Missouri Stream Conservation and Connectivity Prioritization Tool and are not suitable stand-alone products outside of the context of the application.

We use the Dyngjusandur sandsheet, Iceland as a testbed to quantify the type of data necessary to accurately represent ventifact orientations and extract paleowind information through a statistical evaluation of the differences between photogrammetric based and in situ geological analysis. Forty representative ventifacts were selected for in situ measurement, 20 of which were imaged for photogrammetric analysis to produce oriented and scaled virtual 3D models. An additional set of measurements were made on the “synthetic” models to allow for statistical assessment of erosional feature orientation. Despite the similarity between the photogrammetric (1145 measurements), and the in situ datasets (500 measurements),...

This data release presents chemical results from investigations of surface-water quality in the Potomac River watershed (encompassing Washington, D.C. and parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland) conducted during low-flow conditions in July through September of 2022 and modeling results that support interpretative products. Water-quality sampling: A sampling campaign was conducted at 32 stream sites throughout the watershed (Table 1). A suite of field parameters and inorganic and organic chemical characteristics at each site were characterized using seven separate analytical methods at five laboratories (Table 2). The water-quality results are presented in Table 3. Analytical methods and laboratories...

Provided here is a globally distributed catalog of earthquakes and nuclear explosions with calibrated hypocenters, referred to as the Global Catalog of Calibrated Earthquake Locations or GCCEL. This dataset contains 25,838 earthquakes in 364 well distributed clusters. Currently there are more than 4.5M arrival times with the majority being the Pg, Pn, P, Sg, Sn and S phases. The term “calibrated” refers to the property that the hypocenters are minimally biased by unknown Earth structure and that the uncertainties are meaningful. Uncertainties are calculated using empirically determined variability of the arrival time data itself, specific to each calibrated cluster of hypocenters. The data are carefully processed...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Inland Bathymetric and Topobathymetric Survey Inventory, v. 3 includes a survey records inventory and dataset footprints (when available) for inland bathymetric and topobathymetric surveys published by the USGS for the conterminous US, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. Survey records include water feature, state, publication title, data vintage, mission, online linkage to reports and datasets, collection methods, survey and survey product resolution, datums, geoid, and accuracy information if known. This database, identified as the USGS Inland Bathymetric and Topobathymetric Survey Inventory, v.3, Update, has been approved for release by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although this database...

A duplicate digital object identifier (DOI) (https://doi.org/10.5066/P1ZPR9WV) was accidentally published for this resource. The correct DOI for referencing this product is https://doi.org/10.5066/P137NMXE. This is a surface showing relative favorability for the presence of geothermal systems in the western United States. It is an average of 12 models that correlates different geological and geophysical factors to the known presence of moderate (90 - 150° C) to high (> 150° C) temperature geothermal systems. as discussed in the reference in the 'Larger Work' section of this metadata file. The data is represented as a polygon contour file as well as a raster.

Coastal Mean High Water (MHW) is contoured in intertidal zones open to oceans, behind barrier coasts in bays, lagoons, and estuaries, and sometimes where tidal currents reach upstream (landward) of the embayed foreshore water bodies. In the National Geospatial Program (NGP), surface water hydrography is maintained in the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Flowline Network projects Mean High Water level (MHW) as the linear-referenced 1:24,000-scale resolution NHD Coastline (http://nhd.usgs.gov/). NHDCoastline Geomorphology and associated Risk line-event feature classes that rank the relative risk of horizontal erosion on a scale of 1 to 5 (least to most risk, respectively) have been developed using the Hydrography...

This data release contains reflectance spectra of residue (senesced vegetation) for common row crops (corn, soybean, winter wheat) as well as diverse cover crops (cereals, legumes, brassicas) collected in the laboratory using Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) spectrophotometers (n = 296) and collected in the field using the Italian Space Agency's spaceborne PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA) imaging spectrometer (n = 65). The data release also contains biochemical trait concentrations (nitrogen, nonstructural carbohydrates, holocellulose, and lignin) from physical samples used to evaluate biochemical trait mapping of cash crop and cover crop residue. Data collection occurred at the USDA-ARS...
