The Utah Geological Survey's (UGS) Utah Core Research Center, established in 1951 and now occupying a 13,866-square-foot warehouse, contains the region's only publicly available and most complete collection of geologic cuttings and core from Utah. The Utah Core Research Center provides a service to all interested individuals, universities, and companies requiring direct observation of actual samples for their research or investigations, and it acts as a repository for irreplaceable geologic samples which might otherwise be discarded. Used more and more often for education and research endeavors, the Utah Core Research Center offers core workshops for oil company training sessions, geologic program short courses,...

This collection consists of economic geologic information on mining properties and prospects across Arizona and surrounding states. Richard Mieritz was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin before moving to Arizona. He worked at the Silver Bell for ASARCO during the late 1940s. He was later a consultant based out of Phoenix. Records show he was a registered engineer and geologist in Arizona from the 1950s until his death in 1995.

James Sell was a native of Arizona, born in Casa Grande in 1930. He served the U.S. Army as a radio operator in the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal and two Bronze Star Medals. On his return, he studied at the Colorado School of Mines and graduated in 1955. He earned his master's degree from the University of Arizona. He was the Southwest Exploration Manager for ASARCO and retired after 32 years. Sell was a member of the Arizona Geological Society and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. This collection consists of over 1,800 folders containing geologic reports and mineral exploration data from around the world, but primarily from Arizona and other states in the Southwest. Sell...

The Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) Land-Based Core Collection consists of approximately 1,110 boxes of rock and/or sediment core material from 250 known borehole or well locations. These locations include sites in 18 Maryland counties: Anne Arundel, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Kent, Prince George's, Queen Anne's, St Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties. Two cores in the Land-Based Core Collection were collected in Virginia (borehole IDs VA 53T 58 and VA 58H 4). To see the geospatial distribution of source boreholes for cores in this collection, click on the word "Map" in the upper right-hand portion of this page. The majority of...

Larry Kersey was Vice President of Alanco, Ltd., a mineral resource company mostly active during the 1980s and early 1990s. This collection consists of economic geologic information on several properties across Arizona. Many of the properties were in Mohave and Cochise counties. The collection contains geologic reports, maps, assays, field notes and related materials.

This coal map collection consists of maps depicting coal geology, cropline, coal thickness, mined out areas, and drill hole locations. Map detail ranges from intricate to simple. Maps include published and unpublished data. Some information is repeated on different maps. Various maps are printed on regular bond paper, blueline paper, and tracing paper. Maps are located by 7.5 minute quadrangle or 15 minute quadrangle basis.

The "Historical Aerial Photographs of Maryland, 1937-1990, County Collection" consists of black and white aerial photos (9"x9", 1:20,000-scale) from several time periods: 1937-1938, 1949, 1951-1953, 1957, 1961-1964, 1968, 1970-1972, 1979-1981, and 1983-1990. These photographs were usually flown or otherwise acquired by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), or the private firm Air Photographics, Inc. (API). USDA and USGS photographs were donated to the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS), mainly by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA). MGS purchased the copyrighted API photographs. Due to copyright limitations, the public may view the paper API photographs but...

Static metadata (current to June 2023) of Minnesota's borehole drill cuttings collection maintained by the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS). This collection of over 6,400 sets of drill cuttings dates as far back as the late 1800s. The collection is stored in our soil lab at our office and is accessible to the public by appointment. Each borehole cutting set is assigned a MGS lab number upon arrival, processed and washed by UMN student soil lab workers, and stored chronologically in cardboard boxes. Each cutting set cardboard box contains multiple paper envelopes representing a sample taken at that depth. Each paper envelope contains ~100-200 grams of original sample and ~100 grams of washed sample processed by...

Mason Coggin was director of Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources during the mid 1990s. These images were either shot by or collected by him. The newest photo showing a date is from 1953, but some photos were clearly taken as late as the 1970s or 1980s. Perhaps better than any other photo collection from ADMMR, this collection focuses on miners, mines, machinery and buildings. There are several images of the Bisbee and Ajo areas. This collection has not yet been cataloged. Please contact the Arizona Geological Survey to inquire about this collection.
