Lidar-derived digital elevation models often contain a vertical bias due to vegetation. In areas with tidal influence the amount of bias can be ecologically significant, for example, by decreasing the expected inundation frequency. We generated a corrected digital elevation model (DEM) for the area surrounding the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Chesapeake Bay using a modification of the Lidar Elevation Adjustment with NDVI (LEAN) technique (Buffington et al. 2016). GPS survey data (3699 points, collected across four tidal marsh sites in Chesapeake Bay (Eastern Neck, Martin, Bishops Head, and Blackwater) in 2010 and 2017. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from an airborne multispectral...

Portable Document...
Static flood inundation boundary extents were created along the entire shoreline of Lake Ontario in Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, and Wayne Counties in New York by using recently acquired (2007, 2010, 2014, and 2017) light detection and ranging (lidar) data. The flood inundation maps, accessible through the USGS Flood Inundation Mapping Program website at https://www.usgs.gov/mission-areas/water-resources/science/flood-inundation-mapping-fim-program, depict estimates of the areal extent and water depth of shoreline flooding in 8 segments corresponding to adjacent water-surface elevations (stages) at 8 USGS lake gages on Lake Ontario. This item includes data sets for segment E - Lake Ontario...

This data release has three components for each of the eight stream lengths: 1) a geospatial dataset of the processed data; 2) tabular data of the processed waterborne resistivity profiling data and associated water-quality data; 3) tabular data of the raw waterborne resistivity data and associated water-quality data. In fresh water aquifers, the geoelectric resistivity of earth materials commonly has a positive correlation with hydraulic conductivity (Faye and Smith, 1994). Throughout 2017, continuous resistivity profiling data were collected, as a proxy for streambed hydraulic conductivity, along reaches of eight streams in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri. A total of...

Landscape intactness has been defined as a quantifiable estimate of naturalness measured on a gradient of anthropogenic influence and based on available spatial data. We developed a multiscale index of landscape intactness for use as a broad-scale indicator of resource condition for the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Landscape Approach, which requires multiple scales of information to quantify the cumulative effects of land use. The multiscale index of landscape intactness represents a gradient of anthropogenic influence as represented by development levels at two analysis scales. To calculate landscape intactness we combined the terrestrial development index (TDI) summarized at two scales (using a 2.5- and a...

This data release is a compilation of six earlier reports on natural occurrences of asbestos in the conterminous United States, which were published separately; these are Van Gosen (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010) and Van Gosen and Clinkenbeard (2011). The earlier reports were compilations divided by regions of the United States; in each report the data were provided in spreadsheet format. This data release combines the regional datasets into a single compilation for the entire conterminous United States, and includes shapefiles and spreadsheet formats. This data release provides site-by-site information on 876 natural occurrences of asbestos reported within the conterminous United States. This dataset allows the...

This data release provides the description of U.S. sites that include mineral regions, mines and mineral occurrences (deposits) that have a contained resource and (or) production of tellurium metal greater than 1 metric ton. For this data release, only one deposit in the U.S. with historic production records was found: Butte, Montana. We did not locate any deposits in the U.S. that list Te resources. Production facilities, such as the ASARCO LLC’s copper refinery in Amarillo, Texas are not included within this database. Tellurium is necessary for strategic, consumer, and commercial applications. The primary use for tellurium is for Cd-Te film solar cells. Other uses are as an alloying additive to steel to improve...

High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. Seismic data collected during this survey can help to define the rates of deposition within the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, which are the main inflows to Lake Powell. These new data are intended to improve water budget management decisions that affect the natural and recreational resources of the reservoir. Multibeam echosounder bathymetry and...

This raster depicts the percentage of lithological potassium oxide (K2O) content in surface or near surface geology. We derived these rasters by calculating the average percent K2O content for each map unit in combined surficial-bedrock geologic maps. We used state geologic maps (Preliminary Integrated Geologic Map Databases for the United States, Open File Reports 2004-1355, 2005-1305, 2005-1323, 2005-1324, 2005-1325, 2005-1351, and 2006-1272), which depict surficial geology instead of bedrock when the surficial layers are sufficiently deep. For the state maps that do not incorporate surficial geology (i.e., midwestern states), we overlaid surficial geologic map units with thicknesses greater than 100 feet (from...

The data release for the geologic map of the Salmon National Forest and vicinity, east-central Idaho, is a Geologic Map Schema (GeMS)-compliant version that updates the GIS files for the geologic map published in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geologic Investigations Series Map I-2765 (Evans and Green, 2003). The updated digital data present the attribute tables and geospatial features (points, lines and polygons) in the format that meets GeMS requirements. This data release presents the geologic map as shown on the plates and captured in geospatial data for the published map. Minor errors, such as mistakes in line decoration or differences between the digital data and the map image, are corrected in this version....

From July 14-20, 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the City of Ithaca, New York, conducted a bathymetric survey of the Cayuga Inlet flood-control channel and selected mouths of tributaries to Cayuga Inlet and Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, New York. U.S. Geological Survey personnel collected bathymetric data using an acoustic Doppler current profiler. The survey plan generated over 25,000 water depths that were converted to bottom elevations by subtracting the depths from the water-surface elevations recorded by the USGS streamgage, Cayuga Inlet (Cayuga Lake) at Ithaca, N.Y. (station number 04233500), which was located within the surveyed reach. (Information on and data from this streamgage can be found...
