MethodsStudy area: Our initial study area included the entire globe. We began with a seamless grid of cells with a resolution of 0.5 degrees (i.e., ~50 km at the equator). Next, we created polylines representing coastlines using SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission) v4.1 global digital elevation model data at a resolution of 250 m (Reuter et al. 2007). We used these coastline polylines to identify and retain cells that intersected the coast. We excluded 192,227 cells that did not intersect the coast. To avoid cells with minimal potential coastal wetland habitat, we used the coastline data to remove an additional 1,056 coastal cells that contained less than or equal to 5% coverage of land. We also removed 176...

This collection of conservation areas consists of the floodplain of the combined streams of the Iowa River and the Cedar River. The study area begins just southeast of Wapello, IA, and continues southeast until the Horseshoe Bend Division, Port Louisa NWR. The area is currently managed to maintain meadow or grassland habitat which requires intensive management due to vegetative succession. In addition, this floodplain area contains a high proportion of managed lands and private lands in the Wetland Reserve Program and is a high priority area for cooperative conservation actions. This project provides a late-summer baseline vegetation inventory to assess future management actions in an adaptive process. Changes in...

Airborne Geophysical Surveys over the 2011 Mineral, Virginia, Earthquake Area The 2011 moment magnitude (Mw) 5.8 central Virginia earthquake was felt by millions of people and caused significant damage in the eastern United States. As part of efforts to better understand the faults and geologic features associated with the earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey commissioned airborne geophysical surveys over the epicentral area. Here we present the data from those surveys and summarize research results based on those datasets. The following items can be obtained by following links on this page: - Background information on the Mineral, Virginia earthquake and a summary of first analysis results - Downloadable...

In the face of sea level rise and as climate change conditions increase the frequency and intensity of tropical storms along the north-Atlantic Coast, coastal areas will become increasingly vulnerable to storm damage, and the decline of already-threatened species could be exacerbated. Predictions about response of coastal birds to effects of hurricanes will be essential for anticipating and countering environmental impacts. This project will assess coastal bird populations, behavior, and nesting in Hurricane Sandy-impacted North Carolina barrier islands. The project comprises three components: 1) ground-based and airborne lidar analyses to examine site specific selection criteria of coastal birds; 2) NWI classification...

This data release includes the airborne magnetic survey data collected from the Iron Mountain-Menominee region of Michigan and Wisconsin. The Mineral Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey is tasked with understanding the nation's mineral resources. Precambrian rocks in the region are poorly mapped and understood. Detailed high-resolution airborne magnetic surveys, ground gravity surveys, and limited borehole data are being used to better understand the lithology and structure of both exposed and concealed Precambrian rocks. The primary goal of the airborne magnetic survey is to map lateral variations of magnetization that are related to differences in rock type.

Coastal wetland ecosystems are expected to migrate landward in response to accelerated sea-level rise. However, due to differences in topography and coastal urbanization extent, estuaries vary in their ability to accommodate wetland migration. The landward movement of wetlands requires suitable conditions, such as a gradual slope and land free of urban development. Urban barriers can constrain migration and result in wetland loss (coastal squeeze). For future-focused conservation planning purposes, there is a pressing need to quantify and compare the potential for wetland landward movement and coastal squeeze. For 41 estuaries in the northern Gulf of Mexico (i.e., the USA gulf coast), we quantified and compared...

This data set is derived from the original 2005 data collected over the southern San Andreas and San Jacinto fault zones in southern California, USA. These data have provided a fundamental resource for study of active faulting in southern California since they were released in 2005. However, these data were not classified in a manner that allowed for easy differentiation between bare ground surfaces and the objects and vegetation above that surface. This reprocessed (classified) dataset allows researchers easy and direct access to a "bare-earth" digital elevation data set as gridded half-meter resolution rasters (elevation and shaded relief), "full-feature" digital elevation models as gridded one-meter resolution...

Aerial photographs for Pools 2-13 Upper Mississippi River System were collected in color infrared (CIR) in August of 2010 at 8”/pixel and 16”/pixel respectively using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS 439 digital aerial camera. All CIR aerial photos were orthorectified, mosaicked, compressed, and served via the UMESC Internet site. The CIR aerial photos were interpreted and automated using a 31-class LTRM vegetation classification. The 2010 LCU databases were prepared by or under the supervision of competent and trained professional staff using documented standard operated procedures and are subject to rigorous quality control (QC) assurances (NBS, 1995). The 2010/2011 land cover/land use spatial data sets for pools...

The titanium concentrations were obtained from a data set that is called the "National Geochemical Survey." This data set, as well as its documentation, are available in U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2004-1001 (https://mrdata.usgs.gov/geochem/doc/home.htm). The titanium concentrations were measured in 3,457 samples of stream sediments from the coastal plain of the southeastern United States; this area includes parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. The samples were collected between 1975 and 1999 during several field surveys, and the concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Fort Collins Science Center created a national data set of the footprint area of solar arrays for the Bureau of Land Management’s National Operations Center. We identified potential solar facility locations for the conterminous U.S. using the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) utility-scale facilities data from 2015. The footprint area of each solar array was digitized on-screen using true color aerial imagery from the most recently available National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) for each state (NAIP 2013-2015). We used supplementary ESRI basemap imagery accessed via ArcGIS to verify locations of arrays observed in NAIP imagery. Arrays separated by more than 30 meters...
