Ecosystem metabolism is a measure of energy flow in terrestrial and aquatic environments that quantifies a balance between the rate of biomass production by photosynthesizing plants and the rate of biomass oxidation by respiring plants and animals to maintain and build living biomass. It is therefore a fundamental measure of ecosystem function that quantifies the balance between the rate of production, maintenance, and decay of organic matter. It also provides an understanding of energy flow to higher trophic levels that supports food webs with secondary and tertiary productivity. Furthermore, metabolism helps explain when aquatic ecosystems undergo out-of-balance behaviors such as hypoxia. Recent advances in sensor...

Under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the U.S. Geological Survey Mercury Research Lab (USGS MRL) conducted a multiyear assessment of mercury across the Laurentian Great Lakes. Biannual sampling was conducted across all five lakes onboard the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) research vessel Lake Guardian (in years 2010–2014, 2018) at pelagic sampling locations established by the long-term US EPA Great Lakes monitoring program. In addition to the regularly scheduled biannual sampling, in September 2013 and 2014 Lake Michigan and Lake Erie (respectively) were sampled with increased focus on shallow nearshore locations. Throughout these sampling efforts, sediments, mussels, surface water, and plankton...

Lake Erie walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) recruitment fluctuates annually and depends partially on their diet and growth during their first year of life. To determine how age-0 walleye have responded to changes in prey species and abundance, larval and young of year walleye were collected from western Lake Erie in 2019 and 2014. Larval and young of year fish stomachs were extracted and dissected, with prey contents removed for later identification. All prey contents were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level using a dissecting microscope and counted, with up to 20 prey items from each taxa per fish measured (0.01 mm) using a digital computer image analysis system. Zooplankton prey items were identified...

In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project of the National Water Quality Program. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project is to determine how water quality and ecological conditions change over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable ecological monitoring has been conducted on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Fish, invertebrate, and algae data collected as part of the NAWQA program were retrieved from the USGS Aquatic Bioassessment database for use in trend analysis. Ultimately, these data will provide insight into how natural features and human...

This data release contains calculated metrics which summarize various biodiversity and functional/life history trait information about fish communities sampled across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed as well as ancillary data related to time/place of sampling and sampling methodology. The fish sampling data used to compute these metrics were compiled from various fish sampling programs conducted by state and federal agencies, county governments, universities, and river basin commissions across the watershed. Prior to computation of community metrics data from individual fish sampling programs were investigated for completeness and data entry errors. Subsequently, desired fields were extracted from each individual dataset...

Major tidal wetland habitat restoration efforts are planned to benefit Delta Smelt and other imperiled species in the Sacramento-San-Joaquin Delta. However, successful implementation of habitat restoration is constrained by a paucity of information on the services and functions tidal wetlands provide for fishes. This knowledge gap is largely due to the difficulties of collecting ecological data in these challenging environments. For example, the dynamic nature of tidally influenced habitats requires high frequency sampling in order to accurately characterize environmental conditions and how fishes' responses to them. The study associated with this data used an interdisciplinary approach to understand how tidal wetlands...

Recent declines in Lake Whitefish population abundance has prompted research to identify underlying mechanisms controlling survival of early life stages in the Great Lakes. In Lake Erie, the recruitment bottleneck window determining year class strength of Lake Whitefish occurs during the first growing season, suggesting that availability of prey could be controlling year class strength. Therefore, spatial and seasonal larval Lake Whitefish distribution, diet, and environmental zooplankton (potential prey) were collected to evaluate larval Lake Whitefish diets at 31 locations in the western basin during 2017, 2018, and 2021. We removed gut tracks of larval lake whitefish and identified diet items to lowest possible...
