These data consist of species relative cover, percent cover of dead plant material, percent cover of soil and rock, and a variety of broad - and local- scale environmental variables. These data relate to sample sites along the Colorado River through Grand Canyon between Lees Ferry and river mile 245. The plant and ground cover data included here were originally collected as a part of annual vegetation monitoring by Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center. Environmental variables were either recorded in the field or obtained through other data sources. Species and ground cover data were collected in August and September 2014 at 96 randomly selected sample sites that were approximately evenly distributed along...

In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project of the National Water-Quality Program. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project is to determine how water-quality conditions change over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable monitoring has been conducted on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Outside of the NAWQA project, the USGS also has collected long-term water-quality data to support additional assessments of changing water-quality conditions. These data have been combined to provide insight into how natural features and human activities have contributed...

Petroleum production data are usually stored in a format that makes it easy to determine the year and month production started, if there are any breaks, and when production ends. However, in some cases, you may want to compare production runs where the start of production for all wells starts at month one regardless of the year the wells started producing. This report describes the JAVA program the U.S. Geological Survey developed to examine water-to-oil and water-to-gas ratios in the form of month one, month two, and so on with the objective of estimating quantities of water and proppant used in low-permeability petroleum production. The text covers the data used by the program, the challenges with production data,...
The zip file contains shapefiles showing areas of mineral potential for various commodities. The datasets were compiled from previous mineral resource potential reports which covered the SaMiRA project areas. The shapefiles were compiled from datasets which had different data structure schemes and which used two different types of assessment methodology. The BLM used qualitative categorical and others used the USGS quantitative 3-part form of assessment. The original GIS data was re-formatted so that all of the shapefiles had one of two consistent attribute table structures, one for reports that had quantitative data, and one for reports with qualitative data. A general attribute table structure was created which...

About 280 kilometers of multichannel (common-depth-point) seismic reflection profiles were obtained in the central Mississippi River Valley by Geophysical Service Inc. and Western Geophysical Company under contracts with the U.S. Geological Survey. The specific area of the profiles is southeastern Missouri, northeastern Arkansas, and northwestern Tennessee. Geologically, the area is located in the northern part of the Mississippi Embayment.
This workbook summarizes geophysical data for each lithology contained within the USGS Preliminary Integrated Geologic Map Databases for the United States (Open File Reports 2004-1355, 2005-1305, 2005-1323, 2005-1324, 2005-1325, 2005-1351, and 2006-1272). The summarized geophysical data contained in the “Lith Summary” spreadsheet (tab) is used to translate lithologies in state geologic maps into maps of continuous physical characteristics (see Geochemical and Geophysical Characteristics of the Conterminous United States, http://dx.doi.org/10.5066/F7X0653P). Full details of the data are provided in the “ReadMe” spreadsheet at the beginning of the workbook.
This data release consists of a compilation of previously published mineral potential maps that were used for the Sagebrush Mineral-Resource Assessment (SaMiRA) project. This information was used as guides for assessing mineral potential assessment of approximately 10 million acres in Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. Specifically, the compilation was used to identify the deposit types to be assessed and the deposit models to develop. The data release consists of georeferenced images of mineral potential maps and vector shapefiles of mineral potential tracts. The georeferenced images are presented in two formats: 1) as images within raster mosaic datasets in Esri geodatabases, and 2) as individual tiff...

We performed a ground-based, interferometric, synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) survey of the Slumgullion landslide located in Hinsdale County, Colorado. The survey was performed 26 June 2010-1 July 2010 and utilized the IBIS-L InSAR system developed by IDS Corporation. Radar measurements were supplemented by hourly in-situ displacement, pore-water pressure, and rainfall measurements. In-situ displacement was measured using electronic cable extension transducers (extensometers) at three locations and GPS surveying at one location. Pore-water pressures were measured at three locations using electronic vibrating-wire pressure transducers (piezometers). Rainfall was measured at one location using a tipping-bucket rain...

Disturbance disrupts the balance between gross primary productivity and respiration, resulting in a net C loss for some time after a stand-replacing fire. However, our understanding of this process is based on a limited number of studies. Ecosystem C recovery post-fire must be explicitly and carefully examined in order to generate accurate predictions of C cycle impacts of future wildfires and change in fire regimes. Montane ponderosa and lodgepole pine forests, either single-species stands or mixed, dominate surface area in the Southern Rockies. These species have drastically different relationships with wildfire; the current narrative portrays ponderosa pine as accustomed to low-severity surface fires with low...
The .csv table is part of a dataset package that was compiled for use as mineral assessment guidance in the Sagebrush Mineral-Resource Assessment project (SaMiRA). Mineral potential maps from previous mineral-resource assessments which included areas of the SaMiRA project areas were georeferenced. The images were clipped to the extent of the map and all explanatory text, gathered from map explanations or report text, was recorded into this table. This table is to be used in conjunction with the individual georeferenced raster images. It includes the image file name, map title and figure caption when appropriate. The images are also classified according to the legal definition of mineral resources: metallic, non-metallic,...

In 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency characterized water-quality stressors and ecological conditions in 100 wadeable streams across the Midwestern United States. The goal of the study was to determine the relative effects of multiple ecological stressors – contaminants, nutrients, sediment, and habitat – on ecological communities in the streams. The Midwest is an intensely agricultural region where pesticides in streams pose risks to aquatic biota, but temporal variability in pesticide concentrations makes characterization of their exposure to organisms challenging. To compensate for the effects of temporal variability, we deployed polar organic chemical integrative samplers...

Abstract Ecological factors favoring either resprouting or obligate seeding in plants have received considerable attention recently. Three ecological models have been proposed to explain patterns of these two life history types. In this study we test these three models using data from California chaparral. We take an innovative approach to testing these models by not testing community or landscape patterns, but instead, investigating environmental patterns characteristic of pairs of either resprouting or obligate seeding subspecies of Arctostaphylos (Ericaceae), a dominant and diverse shrub genus in chaparral. Four species were investigated that contain both a resprouting and an obligate seeding subspecies. Data...
This data set archives all inputs, outputs and scripts needed to reproduce the findings of W.H. Farmer and R.M. Vogel in the 2016 Water Resources Research article entitled "On the Deterministic and Stochastic Use of Hydrologic Model". Input data includes observed streamflow values, in cubic feet per second, for 1225 streamgages over the period from 01 October 1980 through 30 September 2011. Estiamted streamflows, for the same streamgages and periods, is provided from a general calibration of the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System. Output data includes the same with alternate realizations of streamflow generated following the descriptions in the associated report. These results can be regenerated by using the included...
