Introduction and translocation programs require thoughtful planning to increase the likelihood of success and to understand the benefits, risks, and constraints of such programs. A risk assessment was completed for bull trout introduction into the Sullivan Lake and Harvey Creek watershed, northeastern Washington. The risk assessment was designed to evaluate potential risks to resident fish species, to bull trout introduced into Sullivan Lake, and to bull trout donor source populations. The risk assessment describes the potential risks associated with pathogens, genetics, and ecological interactions. Literature reviews were completed for fish species composition and abundance in Sullivan Lake watershed to assess...

Several Francisella spp. including F. noatunensis are regarded as important emerging pathogens of wild and farmed fish. However, very few studies have investigated the virulence factors that allow these bacterial species to be pathogenic in fish. The Francisella Pathogenicity Island (FPI) is a well-described, gene-dense region encoding major virulence factors for the genus Francisella. PdpA is a member of the pathogenicity determining protein genes encoded by the FPI that are implicated in the ability of the mammalian pathogen, F. tularensis, to escape and replicate in infected host cells. Using a sacB suicide approach, we generated pdpA knockouts to address the role of PdpA as a virulence factor for F. noatunensis....

The U.S. Geological Survey provides a wide range of scientific information to an even wider group of stakeholders. Understanding what capacities are needed and if and or where these capacities exist across the USGS landscape is critical in moving science to the next level of use, implementation, and visualization. The concept behind the groups organized to conduct and interpret the survey that collected these data took advantage of the USGS’s position as a science organization with expertise spanning a wide range of science disciplines, stakeholders, and responsibilities. A survey was conducted of USGS employees (Sep 20-Nov 20) to get a current sample of the capacities that exist across the USGS.

This data set, compiled by the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, provides near-bottom measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen for the Central Basin of Lake Erie. Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). The data loggers were deployed to collect data during August 2021 through November 2022 to better understand how hypoxia develops and influences fish habitat quality during lake stratification. The data loggers were deployed on acoustic telemetry receivers in a network designed to record tagged fish movements (Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, GLATOS). Additional years of data collection are planned, and data release will be updated...

This layer represents fundamentally suitable and unsuitable habitat for freshwater mussels in the Meramec Basin as modeled by these authors on May 17, 2017 based on spatial data ranging from 1990 to 2014. Identification of habitat characteristics associated with the presence of freshwater mussels is challenging but crucial for the conservation of this declining fauna. Most mussel species are found in multi-species assemblages suggesting that physical factors influence presence similarly across species. In lotic environments, geomorphic and hydraulic characteristics appear to be important factors for predicting mussel presence. We used maximum entropy (MaxEnt) modeling to evaluate hydrogeomorphic variables associated...

Environmental DNA (eDNA) water samples were collected at 15 tree islands containing wading bird breeding colonies (order Pelecaniformes) and 15 empty control islands in the central Everglades of Florida in spring of 2017 (April through June) and analyzed for the presence of eDNA from invasive Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus). The Burmese python is now established as a breeding population throughout south Florida, USA. Pythons can consume large quantities of prey and may be a particular threat to wading bird breeding colonies in the Everglades. To quantify python occupancy rates at tree islands where wading birds breed, we utilized environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis—a genetic tool which detects shed DNA in water...

Data are included for two types of field surveys conducted for freshwater mussels within the Neversink River in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Timed search (qualitative) surveys were conducted in consecutive ~200 meter sections of river in 2006 and 2007; a subset of these sections were re-surveyed qualitatively in 2009. The number of mussels of each species and associated search time were recorded for each survey section to determine a catch per unit effort (CPUE; number of individuals found per person hour). Within the 2009 qualitatively surveyed areas, ten ~200 meter sections of stream were selected in which to conduct quantitative surveys to estimate mussel abundance. Quantitative survey methods...

This dataset consists of seven geomorphic variables attributed to standard river mile address points at 0.1 mile (160 m) intervals between Fort Peck Dam and the headwaters of Lake Sakakawea. The data illustrate the geomorphic variation in this 300-km segment of the Upper Missouri River and are indicative of channel complexity, thought to be an important influence on dispersal and retention of larval sturgeon.

This data set provides the results of a conservation prioritization analysis for wadeable streams in Missouri, USA. Higher values (Maximum of 1) represent higher conservation value. Conservation values were derived using Zonation conservation planning software which used species distribution models, a prioritization algorithm (either Core-Area or Additive Benefit), species weighting (None, Vulnerability, or Listing Status), connecitivity (Yes or No), and masks representing different conservation networks (None, Priority Watersheds, Conservation Opportunity Areas, and Existing Conservation Network). For more information see "An Assessment of Stream Fish Vulnerability and an Evaluation of Conservation Networks in...

This dataset was collected to build on past and ongoing monitoring and research efforts within Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). Specifically, the data were collected to test the hypothesis that reductions in canopy cover due to natural disturbances (i.e. wildfire and beetle kill) result in increases in water temperature, or the longitudinal thermal gradient of a stream. Data values include stream temperature paired with light intensity data, and air temperature data to determine the influence of riparian canopy condition and longitudinal warming across a 1 km reach. Two control streams were selected: Ouzel Creek, which has virtually no riparian canopy due to a previous wildfire; and Hunters Creek,...
