The majority of the oil sample collection was collected from selected Ohio oil and gas producing horizons by students of the Ohio State University from August 1981 to March 1982. A small number of samples have been donated by other companies and individuals. The samples were exposed to open air and subjected to temperature changes during collection, but now the samples are sealed in test tubes or glass jars and refrigerated. The following producing horizons were sampled: Trempeleau, Rose Run, Trenton, Clinton/Newburg, Oriskany, Gordon/Ohio, Berea, and Injun. The majority of the oil sample collection was collected from selected Ohio oil and gas producing horizons by students of the Ohio State University from August...

The Earthquake Studies Office (ESO) of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology opened in June, 1980 to operate the Montana Regional Seismograph Network. The office collects and analyzes seismic data and reports earthquake information. The ESO also collects and stores seismograms recorded in Montana by other groups and agencies. Prior to 1989, the only method used to collect earthquake data was paper seismograms recorded on drum recorders using pen and ink, or heat pen and heat-sensitive paper. Thus, paper seismograms recorded before 1989 are original (and irreplaceable) records. Beginning August 1989, a triggered digital recording system was implemented that captured data for larger events but did not provide continuous...

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Geologic Sections dataset consists of site-specific, large-scale geologic cross-sections (composite sheets). These sections were acquired from VDOT in order to save them from disposal. There are 5,500 geological profiles created for highway construction projects containing extensive core, auger and split-spoon logs at scales of 1:50 and 1:100 providing a unique record of subsurface geological and geotechnical data along roadways throughout Virginia. The thousands of feet of vertical subsurface data represents millions of dollars of investment in data acquisition by VDOT. The sections are useful as indicators of subsurface geology in large parts of Virginia. ...

Collection includes macro-fossil specimens of Mesozoic age. Multiple specimens of the same genera are available. Specimens are stored in trays within cabinets. Fossils in this collection were amassed over many years of geological investigations conducted by Geological Survey of Alabama staff.

The Florida Geological Survey (FGS) maintains a collection of geophysical logs run on water production wells, monitor wells, injection wells, oil and gas wells, and stratigraphic testing boreholes throughout the state. The collection represents approximately 5,320 boreholes, some of which are also represented in the core and well cuttings sample collection. The collection includes the following log types: Spontaneous Potential (SP), Single Point Resistance (SPR), Time, Caliper, Fluid Conductivity, Magnetic, Electrical Induction, Natural Gamma, Dipmeter, Laterolog, Micro Laterolog, Neutron, Photo, Radioactivity, Sonic, Temperature, Gamma-Gamma, Resistivity, and Fluid Velocity. The collection contains logs run by...

The Florida Geological Survey (FGS) holds a collection of over 9,000 lithologic descriptions of cores and cuttings from boreholes throughout Florida. This includes legacy logs previously stored in a file format requiring a DOS program to decode. Paper copies of a majority of legacy lithologic logs are stored in 150 large, green loose-leaf binders collectively named “Greenbooks,” (see the Collection of Borehole and Sample Reference Documents from Florida). The legacy files represent 60% of the collection and are currently being prepared for import into the FGS’s database to be made publicly available. The remaining 40% of the collection exist in various formats (both coded and decoded), which the FGS is working to...

Until 2007, when they transferred to the FDEP Division of Water Resource Management’s Mining and Mitigation Program, the Florida Geological Survey (FGS) had an Oil and Gas section who maintained a collection comprised of: permit application and compliance documents; well logs and well test data; monthly production data; and inspection photographs. Once stored in 54, four-drawer legal-sized file cabinets and organized by the permit number, the documents were scanned in batches and transferred back to the FGS. They are currently stored in rolling shelves organized by their scan batch numbers. Scanned documents that are not confidential are available on OCULUS (https://depedms.dep.state.fl.us/Oculus/), a CMS utilized...

The UGS Aerial Imagery Collection contains aerial photography of Utah originally taken from 1935 to the present, and includes over 125,000 frames and associated indexes, orthophotomaps (semi-controlled orthophotos), and other materials. Aerial photographs are highly sought after for use in geologic, geotechnical, and environmental investigations to document geologic hazards, land-use, geomorphologic, and other changes that may have occurred in a particular area, along with mapping geology, cultural, and vegetation features. The collection contains scanned images of aerial photograhs of Utah and a 0.2 degree buffer beyond the boundaries of Utah from 1935 to the present. Imagery indexes are available in the UGS...
