Rainfall measurements were collected in and near the CZU Lightning Complex Fire (hereafter, "CZU Fire") burn area, Santa Cruz Mountains, California. The CZU Fire ignited in the Santa Cruz Mountains, California, on August 16, 2020. By the time of full containment on September 22, 2020, the fire had burned 350 km2 (86,510 acres) in Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) installed four rain gages in and near the CZU Fire burn area to measure rainfall during two post-fire wet seasons. The USGS gratefully acknowledges the cooperation of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, the Big Creek Lumber Co., the McCrary family, and Brookdale Lodge in the collection of these data. This data release contains...

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended-sediment loads, and changes in loads, in major rivers across the Chesapeake Bay watershed have been calculated using monitoring data from the Chesapeake Bay River Input Monitoring (RIM) Network stations for the period 1985 through 2022. Nutrient and suspended-sediment loads and changes in loads were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). The load results represent the total mass of nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment that was exported from each of the RIM watersheds and were estimated using the WRTDS method with Kalman filtering. To determine the trend in loads, the annual load results are...

The USGS Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center (WY–MT WSC) completed a report (Sando and McCarthy, 2018) documenting methods for peak-flow frequency analysis following implementation of the Bulletin 17C guidelines. The methods are used to provide estimates of peak-flow quantiles for 66.7-, 50-, 42.9-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities (AEPs) for selected USGS streamgages. This data release presents peak-flow frequency analyses for selected streamgages in the Upper Yellowstone River Basin, based on data through water year 2022, using methods described by Sando and McCarthy (2018).
In 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in partnership with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) published a new national stormwater quality model called the Stochastic Empirical Loading Dilution Model (SELDM; Granato, 2013). The model is optimized for roadway projects but in theory can be applied to a broad range of development types. SELDM is a statistically-based empirical model pre-populated with much of the data required to successfully run the application (Granato, 2013). The model uses Monte Carlo methods (as opposed to deterministic methods) to generate a wide range of precipitation events and stormwater discharges coupled with water-quality constituent concentrations and loads from the upstream...

Active thermal areas in Yellowstone National Park provide insight into a variety of hydrothermal processes occurring at depth, such as water-rock interactions, the formation of alteration minerals, and microbial (thermophile) metabolism in extreme environments. Research drill hole Y-7 (44°29'8.74", -110°51'7.67") is one of 13 holes completed by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1967 and 1968 at selected sites in hot spring and geyser areas of the park (White and others, 1975). The holes were drilled with a goal of obtaining physical and chemical data on the shallow part of the hydrothermal system. Drill hole Y-7 is located at the northern end of the Biscuit Basin parking lot, in the northern part of the Upper Geyser...

In 2004, about 90 migrating elk drowned after attempting to cross thin ice on the Mores Creek arm of Lucky Peak Lake upstream of the Highway 21 bridge. To better understand the depths over a range of reservoir pool elevations in the Mores Creek Arm, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Lucky Peak Power Plant Project, conducted high-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) bathymetric surveys on the Mores Creek arm on Lucky Peak Lake. The MBES data will assist reservoir managers and wildlife biologists with regulating reservoir water surface elevations (WSE) to support successful big game migration across Mores Creek on Lucky Peak Lake. Data collection provided nearly 100 percent coverage of bed elevations...

Previously constructed steady-state numerical groundwater-flow models for the islands of Kauai, Oahu, and Maui, Hawaii (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20205126) using MODFLOW-2005 with the Seawater Intrusion (SWI2) package, were used to examine the consequences of historical and plausible future withdrawals and changes in recharge. The volcanic aquifers of the Hawaiian Islands supply water to 1.46 million residents, diverse industries, and a large component of the U.S. military in the Pacific. Groundwater also supplies freshwater that supports ecosystems in streams and near the coast. Hawaii’s aquifers are remarkable given their small size, but the islands’ capacity to store fresh groundwater is limited because each...

This USGS data release includes a shapefile of outlet point locations for 12-digit hydrologic units (HU12s) from the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD), dated August 13, 2020 (U.S. Geological Survey and others, 2020), draining to the Gulf of Mexico in the south-central and southeastern United States. The outlet locations were derived by combining the WBD boundaries with flow direction grids from the National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus) v 2.1 (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Geological Survey, 2012). Most of the outlet locations were determined by finding the cell with highest flow accumulation from the NHDPlus flow-direction grids within each WBD HU12 boundary. Some locations were found to be...

This model archive contains files for a set of groundwater flow, particle tracking, and management optimization models that simulate the area around the Navy-Northrop-Grumman contamination plume on Long Island, New York. These models were developed as in insets from the Long Island Regional “parent” Model, from which perimeter boundary conditions were inherited. In addition to input and output files for these models, this archive contains the modeling workflow python code and source data used to build the model. These materials have been included for repeatability and decision transparency.

In support of a preliminary analysis performed by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) that found elevated nutrient levels along selected reaches of the Mohawk River, one-dimensional, unsteady, hydraulic and water-quality models using HEC-RAS and HEC-RAS Nutrient Simulation Module I (version 5.0.3) were developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the 127-mile reach of the Mohawk River between Rome and Cohoes, New York. The models were designed to accurately simulate within-channel flow conditions for this highly regulated, control structure dense river reach. The models were calibrated for the study period of May through September 2016 using best available streamflow, temperature,...

This U.S. Geological Survey data release consists of a tabular dataset containing stream temperature data. Data were collected every 12-hours from 15 sites in Soldier Meadows, Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, Nevada. The sites were established by the Bureau of Land Management - Winnemucca District Office in 2017. The data release includes tabular data of site names, date and time of temperature measurement, and stream temperature in degrees Celsius. The site locations are included below as a shapefile, exported from the National Water Information System (NWIS) Mapper. A site list can be accessed here: National Water Information System site list
This data release contains the results of an isotopic mass balance approach to provide an estimate of the long-term average isotope ratios of NWM streamflow for the summer season (JJA) between 2000 and 2019 in the Western United States. The NWM-estimated long-term average isotope ratios are compared directly to 6426 stream stable isotope observations in 995 unique catchments. Quantified similarities and differences, in the form of p-values, provide useful information about important hydrologic processes. Significant p-values mean that the observed isotope ratio differs from the long-term average mass balance calculated isotope ratios and indicates that flows may be influenced by processes that are not accounted...

This data release documents the data and models used to assess flows, concentrations, and loads of highway and urban runoff and of stormwater within receiving streams in southern New England. There are more than 48,000 locations in southern New England where roads cross streams and many more locations where runoff from developed areas may discharge to receiving streams; information about runoff discharges and the quantity and quality of stormflow upstream and downstream of discharge points is needed to inform resource-management decisions. This analysis was done with a version 1.1.1 of the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model (SELDM) that was populated with regional statistics for southern New England....
Streams provide water for human activities and consumption in much of the world. Streamflow is largely controlled by climate forces, therefore it is likely sensitive to climate changes. We analyzed daily air temperature (AT), precipitation (P), and stream discharge (Q) metrics for 124 watersheds in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina, United States, from 1981 through 2020. Spatial-raster datasets of daily P in mm were downloaded from Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM; http://prism.oregonstate.edu) on March 30, 2021, and datasets of daily AT in degrees Celsius (°C) were downloaded June 22, 2021, both at a 4-square kilometer (km2) resolution for the contiguous U.S. The final quarter...
