Data included are from a series of field sample collections from Lakes Michigan and Huron, and laboratory mesocosms targeting the round goby fish (Neogobius melanostomus). The round goby is a benthic fish that has heavily invaded four of the five Laurentian Great Lakes. Because it inhabits a variety of substrates, including coastal breakwaters, traditional methods (e.g., trawling, trapping) are inadequate to quantify overall population size. Environmental DNA (eDNA) may be a viable option for improving detection and quantification of the species. Field data include number of round goby caught and associated ambient conditions of the aquatic matrix (temperature, pH, turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen). Mesocosm...

Lake Erie walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) recruitment fluctuates annually and depends partially on their diet and growth during their first year of life. To determine how age-0 walleye have responded to changes in prey species and abundance, larval and young of year walleye were collected from western Lake Erie in 2019 and 2014. Larval and young of year fish stomachs were extracted and dissected, with prey contents removed for later identification. All prey contents were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level using a dissecting microscope and counted, with up to 20 prey items from each taxa per fish measured (0.01 mm) using a digital computer image analysis system. Zooplankton prey items were identified...

This data set consists of counts and lengths of fish collected as part of a 2015-2016 evaluation of shoreline remediation projects in the St. Clair River, Michigan, USA. Remediation sites were sites that had undergone shoreline softening to convert vertical seawalls to sloping banks, reduce water depths, create a gradual transition between shoreline to main channel habitats, and provide structure (e.g., root wads and boulders) for fishes and other aquatic biota. Control sites were other wade-able (less than 1 meter) areas along the St. Clair River where shoreline softening projects had not taken place. Control sites included public beaches and access points to the St. Clair River and generally had limited in-stream...

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

A long-term, multiseason, fish egg sampling program is conducted annually on the Detroit, Saint Clair, and Saint Marys rivers to identify where productive fish spawning habitat currently exists and evaluate habitat restoration projects. Egg mats were placed on the river bottom during the spring and fall at historic spawning areas, candidate fish spawning habitat restoration sites, and completed spawning habitat restoration sites throughout the rivers. Widespread evidence was found of lithophilic spawning by numerous native fish species, including walleye (Sander vitreus), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), suckers (Family: Catostomidae), and trout-perch (Percopsis omiscomaycus)....

This data contains coordinate locations for suspected historical spawning locations of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and cisco (Coregonus artedi) across the Lake Erie basin, including the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair River. Data points were summarized using ArcGIS 10.5. Data came from published and unpublished sources cited in the Atlas of the Spawning and Nursery Areas of Great Lakes Fishes (Goodyear et al. 1982) and other sources as described. Data points included were specific locations described as having the presence of eggs or spawning fish. Pseudo-absence data used for comparison purposes are also provided in this data release. First release: 2019 Revised: July 2022 (ver. 2.0)

This data set contains water depths and velocities measured with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) used to develop a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model was used to inform fish spawning habitat remediation projects in the Detroit River near Belle Isle. Prior to construction of three fish spawning reefs in 2016, ADCP measurements were made throughout the study area in 2014 and 2016. ADCP surveys were repeated in 2017 following the construction of the reefs. Water velocity measurements made prior to reef construction were used to calibrate the CFD model predicting the flow field over the remediation sites during pre-construction conditions. Following calibration, the...

To investigate the contemporary distribution of lake whitefish spawning and over-winter egg survival within western Lake Erie, potential spawning locations were sampled for eggs from 2016 to 2018. Eggs were collected using a 39-kg iron sled attached to a diaphragm pump towed for 2 - 5 minutes. The data describe the number, date of collection, and exact collection location of Lake Whitefish fish eggs collected in the western basin of Lake Erie from 2016-2018.

These data include a field study of the sediment hardness and fish egg density (walleye [Sander vitreus] and lake whitefish [Coregonus clupeaformis]) after sediment cleaning treatments (propulsion sled or hydro-jet sled) conducted at two reef locations in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, during 2018 and 2019. The data includes the year, species, reef, treatment type (jet, fan, control), number of eggs, and egg density in the treatment area. Relative sediment hardness for the treatment areas assessed before and after sediment cleaning experiments is provided. Additionally, walleye eggs were collected from Brookville Reservoir, Indiana, and incubated at the aquaculture research laboratory at Purdue University (West Lafayette,...

Recent declines in Lake Whitefish population abundance has prompted research to identify underlying mechanisms controlling survival of early life stages in the Great Lakes. In Lake Erie, the recruitment bottleneck window determining year class strength of Lake Whitefish occurs during the first growing season, suggesting that availability of prey could be controlling year class strength. Therefore, spatial and seasonal larval Lake Whitefish distribution, diet, and environmental zooplankton (potential prey) were collected to evaluate larval Lake Whitefish diets at 31 locations in the western basin during 2017, 2018, and 2021. We removed gut tracks of larval lake whitefish and identified diet items to lowest possible...
These data contain counts of fish species collected with a 1.83 m x 9.14 m bag seine constructed of 1.6 mm Delta nylon mesh. When permitted, five consecutive 15.25 m hauls were made parallel to the shoreline. Sites with smaller shorelines were sampled to the greatest extent possible and distance recorded. The seine was pulled in the upstream direction to allow the net to stay open during sampling. Following each haul, fish were sorted by species and counted. Macrophyte community characteristics (percent cover and species) were assessed by visually approximating the proportion of sites occupied by each species. A rake was used to collect vegetation for lab verification of species identification. Other habitat features...
Egg mat retention trials were conducted with walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) and lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) eggs in an experimental flume tank, seeded directly on egg mats (test retention efficiency) and hand dispersed in flowing flume water to simulate spawning over egg mats (test capture efficiency) with and without alternate substrate. In the field study, we measured number of eggs collected on mats and with bottom drift nets in the Detroit River to compare capture effectiveness. The field collection data describe the number, date of collection, and exact collection location of target species (walleye and lake whitefish). The flume trial data include number of eggs retained or collected, water velocity,...
