Currently, there are many datasets describing landslides caused by individual earthquakes, and global inventories of earthquake-induced landslides (EQIL). However, until recently, there were no datasets that provide a comprehensive description of the impacts of earthquake-induced landslide events. In this data release, we present an up-to-date, comprehensive global database containing all literature-documented earthquake-induced landslide events for the 249-year period from 1772 through August 2021. The database represents an update of the catalog developed by Seal et al. (2020), which summarized events through March 2020 and was based on the catalog developed by Nowicki Jessee et al. (2020). The revised catalog...

These data are a series of telecommunications voice and data restoration percentages for 17 counties affected by the HayWired earthquake scenario, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurring on the Hayward Fault on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. These data for telecommunications demand served are derived from residual network capacity based on potential hazard information (for example, ground shaking and liquefaction), assumptions about dependence on electric power restoration, and assumptions about network congestion caused by demand surge. Various resilience cases pertain to assumptions about the presence of backup power (for example, batteries or generators), ability to truck in fuel and...

The 2018 KÄ«lauea eruption and caldera collapse generated intense cycles of seismicity tied to repeated large seismic (Mw ~5) collapse events associated with magma withdrawal from beneath the summit. To gain insight into the underlying dynamics and aid eruption response, we applied waveform-based earthquake detection and double-difference location as the eruption unfolded. Here, we augment these rapid results by grouping events based on patterns of correlation-derived phase polarities across the network. From April 29 to August 6, bracketing the eruption, we used ~2800 events cataloged by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to detect and precisely locate 44,000+ earthquakes. Resulting hypocentroids resolve complex,...

These data are a geospatial representation of potential damage resulting from fires following the HayWired earthquake scenario, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurring on the Hayward Fault on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. These data take information about prevailing conditions (for example, average wind speed and direction) and potential hazard information (for example, ground shaking and liquefaction) and model the resulting fire-based damages which could occur following the HayWired scenario mainshock. The results are presented as a series of Voronoi polygons centered on known fire stations in the region. This vector .SHP dataset was developed and intended for use in GIS applications...
ShakeAlert, the earthquake early warning (EEW) system for the West Coast of the United States, attempts to provides crucial warnings before strong shaking occurs. However, because the alerts are triggered only when an earthquake is already in progress, and the alert latencies and delivery times are platform dependent, the time between these warnings and the arrival of shaking is variable. The ShakeAlert system uses, among other public alerting platforms like Google Android operating system and smartphone apps, the Federal Emergency Management Agency Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS). IPAWS sends Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) informing people via their smartphones and other mobile devices about...

The data in this data release are comprised of one geospatial vector dataset and three tabular datasets related to the HayWired earthquake scenario, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hypothesized to occur on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. The geospatial vector data are a representation of identified economic subareas for use in selected analyses related to selected counties in and around the San Francisco Bay region in California. Census tracts in seven economic subareas were identified, as was whether a tract potentially has a high concentration of building stock extensively or completely damaged by (1) earthquake hazards (ground shaking, landslide, liquefaction) and (2) all hazards (ground...

These data are from a 3-month long deployment of nodal seismometers that ran from May 18th, 2022 until September 1st, 2022 as part of a Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) experiment above the Gorda plate (McGuire, et al., 2022). The sensors were deployed at 44 locations along Old Arcata Rd between Arcata and Eureka California (Figure 1); these locations track the approximate location of the fiber optic cable used as part of the DAS experiment. The instruments have a battery recording life of approximately one month and were swapped out in the same locations in Mid-June, and Mid-July. Thus, there are 132 instruments that were deployed at 44 distinct locations.

This data release complements Murray et al. (2023) which presents a framework for incorporating earthquake magnitude estimates based on real-time Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data into the ShakeAlert® earthquake early warning system for the west coast of the United States. Murray et al. (2023) assess the impact of time-dependent noise in GNSS real-time position estimates on the reliability of earthquake magnitudes estimated using such data. To do so they derived peak ground displacement (PGD) estimates from time series of background noise in GNSS real-time positions. These noise-only PGD measurements were used as input to a published empirical relationship to compute magnitude for hypothetical earthquakes...

Widespread surface creep is observed across a number of active faults included in the US National Seismic Hazard Model. In northern California, creep occurs on the central section of the San Andreas Fault, along the Hayward and Calaveras faults through the San Francisco Bay Area, and to the north coast region along the Maacama and Bartlett Springs faults. In southern California, creep is observed across the Coachella segment of the San Andreas Fault, through the Brawley Seismic Zone, and along the Imperial and Superstition Hills Faults. Seismic hazard assessments for California have accounted for creep using various data and methods, including the most recent Unified California Earthquake Rupture Forecast, version...

We present a numeric grid containing estimates of the thickness of unconsolidated sediments for the western United States. Values for these grids were combined and integrated from previous studies or derived directly from gravity analyses. The grids are provided with 1-km grid-node spacing in WGS84 latitude-longitude coordinates. Detailed information regarding the derivation of these estimates is provided by Shah, A.K, and Boyd, O.S., 2018, Depth to basement and thickness of unconsolidated sediments for the western United States - Initial estimates for layers of the U.S. Geological Survey National Crustal Model: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2018-1115, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20181115.

These data are damage and loss estimates obtained from various Hazus outputs covering all census tracts in 17 counties in and around the San Francisco Bay region in California, for the HayWired earthquake scenario and sixteen M5 or greater aftershocks occurring in the region during the two years following the HayWired mainshock. The HayWired earthquake scenario is a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hypothesized to occur on the Hayward Fault on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. The estimates contained in this dataset are a subset of the many results products generated by FEMA's Hazus-MH 2.1 application, and reflect potential damage due to the HayWired earthquake scenario mainshock and its aftershocks....
In support of mapping ecological conditions (e.g. invasive annual grass) in sagebrush-dominated landscapes of the western United States, we developed weekly (starting from week 7 to week 42 and Week 1 starts January 1 or Day of the year 1 to 7, week 2 is from Day of year 8 to 14, and so on) 30-m cloud-free Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from 2016 to 2019. The data was generated with machine-learning techniques (i.e., regression tree [RT]) and harmonized Landsat and Sentinel -2 (HLS) data. The geographic coverage includes areas in the Great Basin, the Snake River Plain, the state of Wyoming, and contiguous areas. This NDVI collection allows for local-scale detection and analysis such as, fuel breaks...

This Data Release consists of broadband ground motion simulations for 12 California region earthquakes. The ground motion simulations were done as part of a validation study that is described in more detail in Graves (2022). These simulations were computed using a hybrid simulation methodology (hereafter referred to as GP). The GP approach is a hybrid in that separate responses are computed for the low- and high-frequency components, which are then summed together to produce the full broadband response. This data release provides radiocarbon data for burned plant material collected from deposits following two wildfires in southern California. For the 2020 Bobcat Fire we collected deposits in five stream channels within the Pallett Creek drainage in 2021. For the 2013 Grand Fire near Frazier Mountain, we sampled from two shallow pits excavated into alluvium deposited in 2014. The types of taxa present at each sample location were identified and radiocarbon samples were selected based on the types of material present. This report should be used as the supplementary materials for any publication(s) that uses the radiocarbon dates or taxa identification reported herein.

Measurements of changes in the distance (or length) between monuments are provided. These measurements were made using a two-color Electronic Distance Meter (EDM) that can measure distances between 1 and 10 KM. Nominal precision of these data range from 0.3 mm to 1.0 mm dependent upon the baseline’s length. These measurements were made between mid-1975 to mid-2006. Data in this archive are from eight networks, each consisting of more the 9 baselines. The locations of these networks in California include far northwestern California, Hollister, CA., Long Valley Caldera in eastern California, Parkfield, Pearblossom, and Anza; the last two located in Southern California. For four of the networks (Hollister, Parkfield,...
