This data is a companion to the manuscript titled "Data integration reveals dynamic and systematic patterns of breeding habitat use by a threatened shorebird". Advances in both remote sensing and analytical tools for spatial data have allowed for the integration of dynamic processes into species distribution models. We developed a spatiotemporal model of breeding habitat use and density for a federally threatened shorebird (piping plover, Charadrius melodus) by integrating a 20-year (2000 – 2019) nesting dataset with opportunistic, volunteer collected (eBird), sightings. Piping plovers are an ideal candidate for dynamic habitat models because this species depends on habitat created and maintained by highly variable...
We present two tabular data sets representing values to estimate apparent natal and adult survival and transition probabilities between breeding location states used in a multievent capture-mark-resight model for piping plover adults and hatch year birds in the Northern Great Plains from 2014-2019 focusing on four study areas: U.S. Alkali Wetlands (ALK), Lake Sakakawea (SAK), Garrison Reach of the Missouri River (GRR), and Lake Oahe (OAH). In addition, several covariates were included representing habitat and social variables.

This database contains records of grassland bird abundance and vegetation structure on tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Specifically, under the adaptive-management decision framework (Native Prairie Adaptive Management [NPAM] intiative), we surveyed breeding birds and sampled vegetation on 89 native prairie NPAM units managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, including 55 units in 2011, 87 units in 2012, and 87 units in 2013. The NPAM units occurred in 19 USFWS refuge complexes and wetland management districts, including 14 complexes in USFWS Region 6 (North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana) and five complexes in USFWS Region 3 (Minnesota).

We studied the impacts of using cattle grazing or prescribed fire to manage remnant prairies on plant communities and soil characteristics in the prairie parkland province of western Minnesota. These datasets consist of nested frequency plot plant survey data, study site and soil characteristics, and management information taken from 73 sites owned and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy and private land owners. Because management effects can take many years to become evident, we evaluated response variables on remnant prairies that had been subject to either fire or grazing for at least 10 years prior to our surveys, between 2005-2015.

This dataset contains gray wolf (Canis lupus) study area section counts of pack wolves by method (observing radiocollared wolves and their packmates via aerial telemetry and also noninvasive methods including ground snow tracking, aerial snow tracking, camera trapping, community scientist reports) from a three winter noninvasive methods trial during 2019-2021 in the USGS Wolf Project study area (2,060 square kilometers) of the Superior National Forest, USA, an area that also includes the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Also, included are the total section counts by year during the three winter noninvasive trial and also the prior winter (2018) before the noninvasive trial. Also, included are the annual counts...
Two tabular data sets representing values to examine survival estimates for piping plover nests and chicks in the Northern Great Plains from 2014-2016. We focused on four study areas: U.S. Alkali Wetlands, Lake Sakakawea, Garrison Reach of the Missouri River, and Lake Oahe spanning eastern Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. We followed nests to completion, either success or failure, and created capture histories for uniquely banded chicks.
This dataset contains gray wolf (Canis lupus) survival and cause-specific mortality data from radiocollared wolves (n=756 collared-wolf tenures) from 1968-2018 in the USGS Wolf Project study area (2,060 km2) of the Superior National Forest, USA, an area that also includes the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Also, included are the annual resident winter wolf counts for the study area.

We present two tabular digital data files representing values related how the presence of hetero- and conspecifics influence nest and chick survival for two listed migratory species breeding on the Missouri River; piping plover (Charadrius melodus) and least tern (Sternula antillarum). We followed 2,507 piping plover nests, 3,251 uniquely banded piping plover chicks, 1,060 least tern nests, and 1,377 uniquely banded least tern chicks from 2007 - 2009, 2012- 2016 in the Northern Great Plains of the US. This included river and reservoir habitats present on the Missouri River in North and South Dakota. Not all study areas were studied in all years. The nest survival dataset includes values for use with the Shaffer...

We measured nesting rates and nesting success for a community of cavity-nesting bees across gradients of floral abundance, floral richness, and land-cover in the Prairie Pothole Region. Variables in this dataset include a unique transect identifier, a count of the occupied nests per transect, total floral species richness per transect, total floral stem abundance per transect, bee species richness, number of emerged adult bees per transect, and the proportion of those emerged bees which were female. In addition, there are land-cover measurements of the total area, in hectares, of grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands within 500m and 1500m of each transect. We binned land-covers from the 2019 National Agricultural...

We present a tabular data set representing values used to evaluate hypotheses of breeding habitat selection for immigrants and returning Northern Great Plains piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) from 2014 – 2019. The associated manuscript uses network analysis approach to evaluate five hypotheses of habitat selection. In this approach breeding locations were nodes and successive year breeding attempts form the edges (immigration) and self-loops (fidelity). Included in the dataset are covariates of habitat amount, conspecific density, and habitat quality, as well as other fields used in the analysis. In addition, we include descriptive breeding location-specific metrics from the network graphs.
