This shapefile contains sub-indices comprised of various anthropogenic land use/covers respresentative of the risk of potential habitat degradation to streams within the state of Hawaii. This file is an updated version of 'nfhap_hci_hawaii.shp' and incorporates the suggestion from the Hawaii Fish Habitat Partnership of removing trails and paths from the road network to help better represent amounts of disturbance in remote areas such as the Na Pali coast. Subindices are summarized for local and network catchments specific to perennial stream reaches throughout the state. The local and network catchments were developed using a modified version of the 1:24,000 scale National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) as a baselayer....

This USGS data release is intended to provide a baselayer of information on likely stream crossings throughout the United States. The geopackage provides likely crossings of infrastructure and streams and provides observed information that helps validate modeled crossings and build knowledge about associated conditions through time (e.g. crossing type, crossing condition). Stream crossings were developed by intersecting the 2020 United States Census Bureau Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) U.S. road lines with the National Hydrography Dataset High Resolution flowlines. The current version of this data release specifically focuses on road stream crossings (i.e. TIGER2020 Roads)...

This shapefile contains landscape factors representing potential human disturbances to river systems summarized in 12-digit USGS hydrological units (HUC12s) for the state of Alaska. Variables include land uses, barriers to fish movement, landing strips/airports, mines, point-source pollutant sites, and infrastructure like pipelines, railroads, and roads. The source datasets that were compiled and attributed to HUC12s were identified as being: (1) meaningful for assessing fish habitat; (2) consistent across the entire state of Alaska in the way that they were assembled; (3) representative of conditions from 2000 to 2010; and (4) of sufficient spatial resolution that they could be used to make valid comparisons among...

This shapefile contains summaries of habitat condition indices (HCI scores) from the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) 2010 National Assessments for 12 digit Hydrological Unit Codes (HUC12s) of the United States. Initial HCI scores were developed in three separate assessments (Conterminous U.S., Hawaii, and Alaska) due to differences in data availability across these regions. In the NFHAP 2010 Alaska assesment HCI values were already attributed to HUC12s. For this reason values for Alaska in this shapefile are identical to those represented in the Alaska assessment. To summarize data into HUC12s for the Conterminous United States and Hawaii a length-weighted average was used (i.e. the cumulative HCI score...

This data was generated from a study in which five experiments were conducted that tested whether and how dissolved chemicals might assist food recognition in two filter-feeding fishes, the silver (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and the bighead carp (H. nobilis). The buccal-pharngeal pumping (BPP), a behavior in which fish pump water into their buccal cavities, was observed in both silver and bighead carps after exposure to a a variety of food filtrates and mixtures. In addition, occlusion experiments to determine if the olfactory sense has a very important, but not exclusive, role in bigheaded carp feeding behaviors were conducted.

This shapefile contains summaries of habitat condition indices (HCI scores) from the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) 2010 National Assessments for 8 digit Hydrological Unit Codes (HUC8s) of the United States. Initial HCI scores were developed in three separate assessments (Conterminous U.S., Hawaii, and Alaska) due to differences in data availability across these regions. In the initial NFHAP 2010 Alaska assessment HCI values were attributed to HUC12s. For this reason, to summarize data into HUC8s for Alaska an area-weighted average was used (i.e. the cumulative HCI score assigned to each HUC12 within a HUC8 was weighted by reach area using the formula (H1*A1+H2*A2...+HX*AX)/(A1+A2...+AX) where H = HCI...

Surface sediment samples from the North San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary were collected monthly at five stations located west of Rio Vista and east of Point Pinole. Sediment was collected near Montezuma Slough, Chips Island, the Concord Naval Weapons Station, Carquinez Strait near Martinez, and San Pablo Bay at water depths ranging from 6.5 to 14.3 meters. Samples were collected coincident with water-quality measurements (Cloern and Schraga, 2016) and metal concentrations in filter-feeding bivalves (Brown and Luoma, 1995; Stewart et al., 2013). Depending on the station, the period of record ranges from 13 to 24 years, from December 1993 to September 2017. Samples were sieved to <64 µm to eliminate grain-size bias...

Product Description: This dataset provides maps of peak biomass carbon stock (C) in gC/m2 and net primary productivity (NPP) in gC/m2/yr of coastal herbaceous wetlands at a resolution of 30 m across the conterminous United States (CONUS) for 2015. Aboveground, belowground, and total peak biomass C and NPP are provided for tidal herbaceous wetlands. Data is presented for 1. all herbaceous/emergent marshes, 2. palustrine emergent marshes and 3. estuarine emergent marshes. Background: Spatial assessments of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration in natural ecosystems are necessary to develop climate mitigation strategies. Regional and national-level assessments of carbon sequestration require high-resolution...

We evaluated the thermal regime and relative abundance of native and non-native fish and invertebrates within Kelly Warm Spring and Savage Ditch, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. Water temperatures within the system remained relatively warm year round with mean temperatures less than 20 degrees Celsius near the source, and greater than 5 degress Celsius approximately 2 km downstream of the spring source. A total of 5 non-native species were collected; Convict/Zebra Cichlids (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum), Green Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii), Tadpole Madtom (Noturus gyrinus), Guppies (Poecilia reticulate), and Goldfish (Carassius auratus). Non-native fish (Zebra Cichlids and Swordtails), red-rimmed melania snails...

Advances in drilling technique have facilitated a rapid increase in hydrocarbon extraction from energy shales, including the Williston Basin in central North America. This area overlaps with the Prairie Pothole Region and greater than 35% of wetlands are less than or equal to 1 km from a petroleum-related well. Legacy practices often released saline co-produced waters (brines) that were chloride rich wastes, affecting wetland water quality directly or persisting in sediments. Despite the potential threat of brine contamination to aquatic habitats, there has been little research into their ecological effects. We capitalized on a gradient of legacy brine-contaminated wetlands in northeast Montana to conduct laboratory...

The objectives of the present study were to develop methods for propagating western pearlshell (Margaritifera falcata) for laboratory toxicity testing and evaluate acute and chronic toxicity of chromium VI [Cr (VI)] to the pearlshell and a commonly tested mussel (fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea at 20°C or in association with a co-stressor of elevated temperature (27°C), zinc (50 µg Zn/L), or nitrate (35 mg NO3/L). A commonly tested invertebrate (amphipod, Hyalella azteca) was also tested in chronic exposures.

This metadata record represents passive immunity components of six songbird species (Passeriformes) in a single taxonomic family, the New World blackbirds (Icteridae). Six immune elements were compared among blackbird eggs collected in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Puerto Rico, including immunoglobulins (Ig) in both yolk and albumen, lipopolysaccharide-specific immunoglobulins in both yolk and albumen, and ovotransferrin and lysozyme in albumen. The data were summarized and used in the analysis for a peer-reviewed journal publication entitled: "Do life history traits influence patterns of maternal immune elements in New World blackbirds (Icteridae)?" The data consist of two data sets. The first data set includes...

A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center visited sites nine times throughout the breeding season (late May to mid-July) to record counts of grassland birds. Surveyors applied North American Breeding Bird Survey methodology to obtain counts at On-, Near-, and Off-road Stops, but unlike the North American Breeding Bird Survey, which features a single survey at each site, three replicate surveys were conducted on back-to-back-to-back days during each survey period to facilitate estimation of detection and occupancy probabilities. Assignment of surveyors to individual sites followed a design protocol that allows observer effects to also be estimated. The biologist visited each site once...

During 2013-2017, the U.S. Geological Survey, National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project, collected water samples year-round from the National Water Quality Network – Rivers and Streams (NWQN) and reported on 221 pesticides at 72 sites across the US in agricultural, developed, and mixed land use watersheds. Pesticide Toxicity Index (PTI) scores, a screening-level tool that uses an additive, toxic-unit model, were calculated to estimate the potential chronic and acute toxicity to 3 taxonomic groups – fish, cladocerans, and benthic invertebrates. The pesticide that makes the single largest (maximum) contribution to the PTI is called TUmax. This dataset consists of the PTI and TUmax scores, as well as, the TUmax...
