The Stream Conditions of Chester County Biological Monitoring Network was established by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Chester County Water Resources Authority in 1969. Benthic-macroinvertebrate, habitat, and stream chemistry data were collected annually from 1998-2021 at 18 fixed location sites. Additionally, nine flexible location sites were selected and sampled annually from 1998-2021. Some of the flexible location sites were sampled more than once over the study period. All data were collected in the fall months (October-November) during baseflow conditions. The benthic-macroinvertebrate data collected was used to calculate six metrics and to establish an index of biotic integrity for each sample, while...

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) studied several sites in the northern East Gulf Coastal Plain of Alabama to investigate effects of newly installed box culverts on the natural conditions of the streams they are traversing (Pugh and Gill, 2021). Data collection for the study spanned approximately 10 years and included before-, during-, and after-construction phases of box culvert installations at selected stream sites. The objectives of the project were to (1) assess the degree and extent of changes in geomorphic conditions, suspended-sediment concentrations, turbidity, and benthic macroinvertebrate populations at selected small streams following box culvert installation...

Macroinvertebrate samples were collected from streams tributary to Honnedaga Lake and from the Middle Branch of the Black River during 2012-2016 and analyzed for methylmercury concentrations and for stable isotope ratios of nitrogen and carbon. Macroinvertebrates were identified in the field, and the level of taxonomic resolution varied from order to species; most taxa were identified to the family level. Specimens were field-processed into composite samples, field-frozen, and submitted to the mercury laboratory for freeze-drying and analysis. Subsamples were then submitted to the stable isotope laboratory for analysis of nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios. This database contains the resulting data and associated...

These data were collected from the TOPGUN-SODA10 2AK core collected in 2010 by LacCore (University of Minnesota), the USGS. and the University of California (U.C.) Berkeley. The 8.9 meter length core had stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon sampled every 10 millimeters or so, and diatoms samples at every 50 millimeters to 200 millimeters depending on the depth in the core. mineralogic data were collected using X-ray diffraction and grain-size analysis were done at various depths. These data are used to interpret the Holocene and late Pleistocene hydrology and paleoclimate of the lake and the region. The interpretation can be found in: Rosen, M.R., Reidy, L., Starratt, S., Zimmerman, S., in review, Middle Holocene...

Physical and chemical changes affect the biota within urban streams at varying scales ranging from individual organisms to populations and communities creating complex interactions that present challenges for characterizing and monitoring the impact on species utilizing these freshwater habitats. Salmonids, specifically cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), extensively utilize small stream habitats influenced by a changing urban landscape. This study used a comprehensive fish health assessment concurrent with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Pacific Northwest Stream Quality Assessment in 2015 to quantifiy impacts from disease in juvenile coho and cutthroat salmon, impacts to...

To support research on remote sensing of rivers, hyperspectral image data and supporting field measurements of water depth obtained with a multibeam echosounder were acquired from a segment of the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 26 and 27, 2017. These data sets also facilitate efforts to characterize in-stream habitat for sturgeon, understand and model dispersion processes, and monitor geomorphic change along the Kootenai River. This parent data release includes links to child pages for the following data sets: 1) airborne hyperspectral image data acquired from a conventional, manned, fixed-wing aircraft; 2) ground-based depth measurements obtained during a multibeam echosounder survey; and 3) in...

Benthic diatom assemblages are known to be indicative of water quality but have yet to be widely adopted in biological assessments in the United States due to several limitations. Our goal was to address some of these limitations by developing regional multi-metric indices (MMIs) that are robust to inter-laboratory taxonomic inconsistency, adjusted for natural covariates, and sensitive to a wide range of anthropogenic stressors. We aggregated bioassessment data from two national-scale federal programs and used a data-driven analysis in which all-possible combinations of 2-7 metrics were compared for three measures of performance. The datasets in this release support the Carlisle, et al. 2022 report cited herein....

A total of 27 temperature sensors were deployed along the lower 90 miles of the Yakima River at 7 locations where cold water had been previously observed. These 7 cold-water areas had 3 to 6 temperature sensors installed to document the extent and duration of these cold-water areas and their impacts on mainstem temperatures of the Lower Yakima River. Cold-water areas included the mouths of tributaries, alongside channels, and within alcoves. Sensor deployments ranged from 1 to 2 years beginning in October 2018. All temperature data are included in the Yakima.temperatures.zip folder. Details of each monitoring location are provided in the site.locs.csv file. In addition to the raw data and site location information,...

This metadata record presents analytical results for laboratory microcosms conducted during 2016–18 as part of a study to develop a field test and numerical interpretation method to determine the effective diffusion coefficients and sorption coefficients of trichloroethene (TCE) and daughter products in the rock matrix of sedimentary rock, as well as biodegradation rate coefficients in the borehole. The biodegradation rate coefficients in the borehole are an important component of defining the back-diffusion of TCE from the matrix of sedimentary rock. Microcosm experiments were conducted with microbial community samples and groundwater collected from boreholes in the field test area to define anaerobic biodegradation...

The Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS), located about 28 miles northwest of New Orleans, was constructed by the US Army Corp of Engineers in the early 1930s as part of an integrated flood-control system for the lower Mississippi River (MR). The BCS control structure consists of 350 individual bays that can be opened to divert water from the river to Lake Pontchartrain to relieve pressure on downstream levees. Lake Pontchartrain (LP) is hydrologically connected to the Mississippi Sound (MS Sound) and the Gulf of Mexico and is more accurately characterized as an estuarine embayment. BCS openings have occurred twelve times prior to 2019 because of high Mississippi River stages, typically in late spring. In 2019, the spillway...

Benthic invertebrate communities are monitored because the composition of those communities can affect and be affected by the water quality of an aquatic system. Benthic communities use and sometimes regulate the cycling of essential elements (for example, carbon). Benthic invertebrate taxa may also indicate acute and chronic stressors in an environment because they accumulate contaminants and can respond – sometimes dramatically - to oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions. Benthic communities affect water quality by grazing pelagic food resources and increasing the rate of nutrient regeneration through feeding and bioturbating sediments. South San Francisco Bay is a system dependent on phytoplankton as the base...
