This dataset consists of methane flux data collected with eddy covariance methods; and methane ebullition data collected with gas traps, time-lapse cameras, and capacitance probe measurements. Inferred bubble production and soil volumetric gas content data from capacitance probe measurements also are included. These data were collected from July to November 2016 at two forested wetlands in Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida. Gas trap, time-lapse camera, and capacitance probe data were collected at platforms located within the source area of each eddy covariance tower in forested wetlands. Each platform consisted of an array of gas traps, one time-lapse camera, and one capacitance probe. The location (geographic...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides phytoplankton data collected from Milford Lake, Kansas, during July 27 and August 31, 2015. This data release was produced in compliance with the federal open-data requirements as a way to make scientific products associated with USGS research efforts and publications available to the public. The dataset includes all samples collected at three long-term U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) sites on Milford Lake. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundance (density) and biovolume are reported.

This dataset contains carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values, percent carbon and percent nitrogen, algal pigment data, and diatom taxonomy from lake sediment layers dating back to 1749 Common Era (CE) for Santa Fe lake, New Mexico. Subalpine and alpine lakes are typically sensitive indicators of anthropogenically driven global change. Lake sediment records in the western United States have documented increases in percent carbon (%C), percent nitrogen (%N), and primary productivity during the 20th century. Eutrophication of mountain lakes reflects the influences of atmospheric nutrient deposition and warming. We analyzed a short (49 cm) sediment core from Santa Fe Lake, NM to investigate patterns of change in...

This data set, compiled by the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, provides near-bottom measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen for the Central Basin of Lake Erie. Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). The data loggers were deployed to collect data during mid-May 2021 through late October 2021 to better understand how hypoxia develops and influences fish habitat quality during lake stratification. The data loggers were deployed on acoustic telemetry receivers in a network designed to record tagged fish movements (Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, GLATOS). Additional years of data collection are planned, and data release will be...

Endangered Banbury Springs limpet and threatened Bliss Rapids snail populations in springs along the Snake River in southern Gooding County, south-central Idaho, are declining. To protect these species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) needs to understand what affects the species' habitat such as aquatic vegetation, associated with elevated nitrate concentrations in the springs. In cooperation with the USFWS, the U.S. Geological Survey developed surrogate regression models to estimate nitrate concentration using specific conductance, day of the year, and streamflow as potential explanatory variables. These surrogate models provide a cheaper alternative than measuring nitrate concentrations directly, through...

Two sets of PHREEQC input and output files are provided that illustrate the distribution of aqueous ammonium and ammonia as a function of physical (temperature) and chemical (pH and solution composition) conditions. One set of simulations calculates the distribution of aqueous ammonia and aqueous ammonium over a range of temperatures and pH values in different solution compositions. The other set of simulations illustrates how aqueous ammonia concentrations in a water body change over time owing to changes in pH and temperature, how ammonia concentrations potentially toxic to salmonids (trout and salmon) can occur owing to changes in pH and temperature, and how these changes in ammonia concentration can be calculated...

This dataset includes data for water, sediment, and biota samples collected at 250 locations in the northwestern Sierra Nevada and the Trinity Mountains during 1999–2012. The locations were chosen to assess potential effects from historical mining, with a focus primarily on mercury contamination associated with placer gold mines in the Sierra Nevada and the Trinity Mountains, and a hard-rock mercury mine in the Trinity Mountains. Trace elements and major elements were analyzed in selected samples. All analyses of mercury, methylmercury, and (or) trace and major elements in water and sediment were performed by U.S. Geological Survey laboratories. Biota samples (invertebrates, fish, and frogs) were analyzed for mercury,...

Extant population monitoring and habitat assessment data sets of benthic species were used as inputs for occupancy models focused on Sicklefin and Sturgeon chub with the goals of describing temporal, spatial, and environmental factors associated with occupancy patterns of each chub species, assessing co-occurrence of the two species, and determining relationships between co-occurrence and environmental factors. We also used three-species occupancy models to assess co-occurrence of these chubs with other primarily benthic species. This data set is comprised of the outputs of these models.

This dataset presents the results of passive water sampling conducted at 2 sites in 2013 and 3 sites in 2014 in Lake Mead National Recreational Area. Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) and Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) were deployed in Las Vegas Bay and Overton Arm in 2013 and Las Vegas Bay, Boulder Basin, and Overton Arm in 2014. The samplers were analyzed for concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorines (DDT-type compounds and their degradates), polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), waste indicators (WW), and yeast estrogen screen (YES) by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC)...

We provide a comprehensive review of the status of non-native fishes in the central Indian River Lagoon (from Cape Canaveral to Grant-Valkaria, east of I-95) through literature review and field surveys. Historical records exist for 17 taxa (15 species, one hybrid, one species complex). We found historical records for one additional species and collected one species in our field survey that had never been recorded in the region before (and which we eradicated). Thus, we evaluate 19 total taxa herein. Of these, we document range expansion of four salt-tolerant cichlid species, extirpation of six species that were previously recorded from the area and eradication of three species. There was no noticeable change in...

The dataset is a composite of morphological data used in the description of a new species of marine fish, Trachinotus macrospilus (Teleostei: Carangidae), endemic to the Marquesas Islands of the Indo-West Pacific. In the addition to the newly described species, three previously named (nominate) species of the same genus are compared and redescribed in this same manuscript. The morphological data include both mensural (morphometric) and meristic (count) data. Synonymies are provided for all species, since many misidentifications have been made in the literature, which dates to the early 1800's.
Ecological models facilitate evaluation and assessment of alternative approaches to restore the Greater Everglades ecosystem. The models of particular interest to the South Florida Water Management District for planning for the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir were: (1) Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow Marl Prairie Indicator, (2) Florida apple snail (native) population model (EverSnail), (3) Wader Distribution Evaluation Modeling (WADEM), (4) Small-sized freshwater fish density, and (5) American alligator production probability (i.e., habitat suitability index (HSI)). We ran these models using hydrologic conditions (provided by the South Florida Water Management District, see Process Steps section below) for...
