Two data sets concerning organic contaminants are included here to aid in assessment of the sea otter population collapse in southwest Alaska. One data set consists of levels of organic pollutant compounds found in wild sea otter blood collected from captured animals in 1997 (Jessup et al., 2010). These sea otters were captured from islands in the western Aleutians and from outside the area of population collapse, in southeast Alaska near Cross Sound. Another data set consists of levels of organic pollutant compounds found in blue mussels collected from multiple sites along the Aleutian archipelago and from the Cross Sound area in southeast Alaska in 1994-1996 (Reese et al., 2012). These data support the following...

To evaluate the potential uptake and accumulation of pesticides in amphibians, American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) tadpoles were collected from surface water sites (four ponds and one reservoir) in 2021 near Mead, Nebraska. Sites were located in the landscape surrounding the AltEn ethanol plant, a plant which had previously received pesticide treated (coated) seeds. Tadpoles were collected in November 2021, these tadpoles hatched in June 2021. The tadpole tissues were dried, homogenized, and then extracted using acetonitrile at 100 °C. Samples were analyzed for 166 pesticides and degradates using both gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Overall, 14 pesticides and degradates were detected...

This study was designed to examine mercury (Hg) stable isotope values in filtered water and suspended particulate matter from tributaries to the Snake River located in Oregon and Idaho. Water samples were collected from 21 tributary sites representing a range of watershed land use types (e.g., agriculture, forest, etc.) within the Snake River Basin. In 2018, water samples were collected at tributary sites near the confluence of the Snake River and at sites upstream higher in the watershed. In the 2019 and 2020, the tributary water sample collection was focused on downstream sites near the Snake River. In addition, from 2015-2018 Hg stable isotopes were also measured in air, bed sediment, and geologic material from...
Waters co-produced during petroleum extraction are normally considered wastes but are also possible resources, especially in water-stressed regions. Produced waters can be chemically complex. High salinity, naturally occurring radioactive materials, and organic substances derived from the producing formation can complicate treatment processes. Rapid screening methods to characterize produced waters could be important in determining effective and efficient treatment strategies, as the composition of these produced waters can vary dramatically. In this study, excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMs) was used to assess the types of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM) present in produced waters from six...

This data release presents the Yale stocks and flows database (YSTAFDB). Its data describe the use of 102 materials from the early 1800s to circa 2013 through anthropogenic cycles, their recycling and criticality properties, and on spatial scales ranging from suburbs to global. This data collection was previously scattered across multiple non-uniformly formatted files such as journal papers, reports, and unpublished spreadsheets. These data have been synthesized into YSTAFDB, which is presented as individual comma-separated text files and also in MySQL and PostgreSQL database formats. Consolidation of these data into a single database can increase their accessibility and reusability, which is relevant to diverse...

Dam decommissioning is rapidly emerging as an important river restoration strategy in the U.S., with several major removals recently completed or in progress. But few studies have evaluated the far-reaching consequences of these significant environmental perturbations, especially those resulting from removals of large (>10-15 m tall) structures during the last decade. In particular, interactions between physical and ecological aspects of dam removal are poorly known. From recent work, however, observations are now available from several diverse settings nationwide to allow synthesis of key physical and ecological processes associated with dam removals, including fish and benthic community response, reservoir erosion,...

Groundwater contaminated with naturally occurring arsenic is a widespread problem affecting many alluvial and deltaic aquifer systems throughout the world. The human health toll from consuming groundwater with high levels of arsenic is staggering in its proportions. Furthermore, the use of arsenic contaminated groundwater for irrigation is observed to result in diminished crop yields and thus poses a threat to food security in arsenic affected regions. Decades of research at individual field sites have resulted in the collection of many geochemical and geologic datasets. A key feature of alluvial and deltaic aquifer systems is the large degree of spatial variability in groundwater arsenic concentrations from local...

The National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site is located near where about 1.7 million liters of crude oil spilled in 1979. Much of the oil spill leached into groundwater which flows towards an unnamed lake at the site. The U.S. Geological Survey Branch of Hydrogeophysics has been working to map the plume's extent on land and into the lake using a variety of geophysical techniques. In 2018, the group was able to map a group of anomalies within the lake consisting of elevated specific conductance concentrations. It was determined that these specific conductance anomalies were likely attributed to hydrocarbon plumes leaching into the lake. In 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey Central Midwest...
The Grand Calumet River (GCR), located in northern Indiana, is contaminated due to a wide range of historical industrial activities. Short-term and long-term sediment exposure bioassays with the amphipod Hyalella azteca, the midge Chironomus dilutus, and the mussel Lampsilis siliquoidea were conducted with samples collected in 2013, 2015, and 2017, from up to 26 sites, including both remediated, non-remediated and relatively uncontaminated reference sites. The responses (survival, growth, reproduction and/or emergence) of test organisms to the exposure bioassays are presented here.
System-scale restoration efforts within the Upper Mississippi River Restoration Program have included annual monitoring of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) since 1998 in four representative reaches spanning approximately 440 river km. We developed predictive models relating monitoring data (site-scale SAV abundance indices) to diver-harvested SAV biomass, used the models to back-estimate annual standing stock biomass between 1998 and 2018 and compared biomass estimates to previous abundance measures. Two morphologically distinct groups of SAV with differing sampling efficiencies were modeled and estimated separately: the first category included only Vallisneria americana which has long, unbranched leaves and dominates...

Sediment samples were collected from mercury-contaminated streams and lakes in Texas, Virginia, and Tennessee and were analyzed for total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN). A portion of the sample was combusted at 550 degrees C for 2 hours prior to analysis to remove the organic carbon and nitrogen, thus giving total inorganic carbon (TIC) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). Total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON) were calculated from these values.

Data in this release were collected and computed to evaluate the occurrence of pesticides in shallow groundwater in the state of Alabama. Additionally, these data support interpretation in Gill (2023) for a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries. During 2009-2020, samples were collected from twenty-four wells located near agricultural land use in Alabama and evaluated for concentrations of agricultural pesticides and pesticide degradates. Most data produced from the sampling effort are available from the publicly accessible USGS National Water Information System (NWIS; U.S. Geological Survey, 2023). For certain pesticide compounds, data were...

This dataset includes data for water, sediment, and biota samples collected at 250 locations in the northwestern Sierra Nevada and the Trinity Mountains during 1999–2012. The locations were chosen to assess potential effects from historical mining, with a focus primarily on mercury contamination associated with placer gold mines in the Sierra Nevada and the Trinity Mountains, and a hard-rock mercury mine in the Trinity Mountains. Trace elements and major elements were analyzed in selected samples. All analyses of mercury, methylmercury, and (or) trace and major elements in water and sediment were performed by U.S. Geological Survey laboratories. Biota samples (invertebrates, fish, and frogs) were analyzed for mercury,...

3D bathymetric surfaces of low- and high-relief sites from the coral reef flat off Waiakane, Molokai, were created using structure-from-motion (SfM) techniques. The two study sites are located approximately 640 m from shore and approximately 20 m apart in the alongshore direction. At each site, an approximate 12-meter diameter area was imaged in three passes by a swimmer using a handheld digital camera. These images were fed into Structure-from-Motion (SfM) software to produce high-resolution (fine-scale), accurate, and precise topographic point clouds with sub-centimeter accuracy for both the low- and high-relief sites. In addition, a subset of a previously published (Logan and Storlazzi, 2022), coarser-scale,...
