The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected hydroacoustic data of the St. Croix River adjacent to the Osceola (WI) boat ramp for hydrographic and benthic mapping prior to the reconstruction project implemented by the National Park Service (NPS). High-resolution bathymetry data was surveyed using a multibeam sonar. The depth and characteristics of the riverbed are important parameters of habitat for benthic (bottom-dwelling) organisms, and are a fundamental parameter for riverine ecosystems. Fluvial geomorphology is the study of forming and shaping landforms caused by the action of water. These landforms can be classified to macro and meso habitat classes, to better understand habitat associations. These datasets...

This dataset is a digital surface model of the roughness for five (of six) sites where known rock structures exist in the St. Croix River. Roughness is the degree of irregularity of the surface and is computed from elevation. Roughness measures will be used for investigating the use of hydroacoustic technologies for quantifying habitat for imperiled mussels Spectaclecase (Margaritifera monodonta) and Salamander (Simpsonaias ambigua) typically associated with rock structures (e.g., wing dams, revetment) in rivers. The determination of the roughness plays a role in the analysis of terrain elevation data; it’s useful for calculations of the river morphology and physical geography in general. Multibeam sonar data were...

This dataset is a digital image mosaic of the backscatter for five (of six) sites where known rock structures exist in the St. Croix River. Backscatter is the strength of the returned signal, or reflectivity, of the riverbed and provides information about bed composition. This data can be used to investigate properties of the riverbed, such as hardness, sediment characteristics and even sediment grain size. Backscatter information will be used for investigating the use of hydroacoustic technologies for quantifying habitat for imperiled mussels Spectaclecase (Margaritifera monodonta) and Salamander (Simpsonaias ambigua) typically associated with rock structures (e.g., wing dams, revetment) in rivers. MBES bathymetry...

The comma-delimited fields in this dataset provide values for the remotely sensed variables analyzed for landscape blocks described in the paper, "Multi-year data from satellite- and ground-based sensors show details and scale matter in assessing climate’s effects on wetland surface water, amphibians, and landscape conditions," by Sadinski et al. (submitted). The field labeled “BlockSite” links the records in this file with a set of boundaries in a shapefile called “Study_Block_Boundaries.shp” The records represent weekly measurements of normalized difference vegetation index (BlockNDVI) values and total evapotranspiration (BlockETmm), as well as the annual snow-off date (BlockDOYsnowfree) for the study blocks from...

This data release provides water chemistry results and quality assurance data for samples collected from Great Lakes tributaries in the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and New York. In total, 158 chemicals were analyzed which are primarily pharmaceuticals. Between one and four water samples were collected at 37 sampling locations between November 2017 and July 2018 resulting in a total of 87 environmental, 95 field replicate, and 15 field blank samples. Of the 158 chemicals analyzed, 23 chemicals were detected in at least one regular sample. Detections per site ranged from 0 to 12 chemicals at concentrations of 1.56 to 30900 nanograms per liter. Sample collection and analysis was performed...

This dataset was replaced in 2020 with data services. The DOI now points to the newest and recommended version of this information. This shapefile displays and describes National Fish Habitat Partnership project locations. The included projects were extracted from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Fisheries Information Structure (FIS) on July 2013. Project centerpoints were verified and corrected as needed by Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission staff where data were available by comparing location descriptions in the project attributes with satellite imagery. When the centerpoint was not initially reported available locational attributes were used to create an approximated centerpoint. After verification...

This dataset represents results from this study attributed to the NHDPlus V2 catchments. Changes in climate occurring throughout the Mississippi River Basin are expected to lead to additional impacts in stream habitats and fish assemblages in multiple ways, including changing changing thermal properties and flow regimes. To manage streams for current impacts and future changes, managers need region-wide information for decision-making and developing proactive management strategies. Our project provides a suite of climate metrics that have been found to be relevant to the distribution and population structure of aquatic organisms in freshwater stream networks. These results provide natural resource managers, decision-makers,...

Ecoregions of the United States, developed by Robert G. Bailey of the Forest Service Inventory and Monitoring Institute. From metadata: this data set shows ecoregions, which are ecosystems of regional extent, in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Four levels of detail are included to show a hierarchy of ecosystems. The largest ecosystems are domains, which are groups of related climates and which are differentiated based on precipitation and temperature. Divisions represent the climates within domains and are differentiated based on precipitation levels and patterns as well as temperature. Divisions are subdivided into provinces, which are differentiated based on vegetation or other natural...

This date release was produced as part of the Milwaukee Area Watercourse Corridor Study in partnership with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) to monitor and assess stream water quality within studies of aquatic communities, geomorphology and habitat, water and sediment, and streamflow. This dataset contains two vector datasets of stream geomorphic characteristics, pre-settlement vegetation, and geomorphic setting attributes derived for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 1:24,000-scale Hydrography Dataset flowline network in the Kinnickinic River and Menomonee River sub-basins of the Milwaukee River basin in eastern Wisconsin. The attributes used in the classification of network reaches...

Fisheries in the glacial lakes region of the upper Midwest are culturally, economically, and recreationally beneficial. Walleye, for instance, represent an important subsistence food source for some Wisconsin tribal nations and are also popular among recreational anglers. However, predicted ecological changes to these aquatic communities, such as an increase in invasive fish species, a decrease in walleye and other native fishes, and worsening water quality due to increases in temperature and shifts in precipitation, has prompted concern among regional anglers who may abandon certain fisheries as these changes occur. Understanding how changes in climate may affect glacial lakes region fishes, and how fishery managers...

This data release is a compilation of six earlier reports on natural occurrences of asbestos in the conterminous United States, which were published separately; these are Van Gosen (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010) and Van Gosen and Clinkenbeard (2011). The earlier reports were compilations divided by regions of the United States; in each report the data were provided in spreadsheet format. This data release combines the regional datasets into a single compilation for the entire conterminous United States, and includes shapefiles and spreadsheet formats. This data release provides site-by-site information on 876 natural occurrences of asbestos reported within the conterminous United States. This dataset allows the...
