To address the data and information gap for characterizing coastal drought, a coastal salinity index (CSI) was developed using salinity data (Conrads 2016; Conrads and Darby, 2017). The CSI uses an approach similar to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), a readily available drought index that is widely used for monitoring meteorological droughts (McKee and others, 1993). The CSI substitutes total monthly precipitation with monthly mean salinity data to determine the probability of recording a given salinity value in a particular month. The initial investigation demonstrated that the index could be used to delineate short- and long-term drought (saline) and wet (high freshwater inflow) conditions; however,...

SPARROW model dataset for total suspended solids in North Carolina, including simulated stream loads
To better understand the influence of human activities and natural processes on surface-water quality, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) developed the SPARROW (SPAtially Referenced Regressions On Watershed attributes) (Schwarz and others, 2006; Alexander and others, 2008) model. The framework is used to relate water-quality monitoring data to sources and watershed characteristics that affect the fate and transport of constituents to receiving surface-water bodies. The core of the model consists of using a nonlinear-regression equation to describe the non-conservative transport of contaminants from point and nonpoint sources on land to rivers, lakes and estuaries through the stream and river network. In North Carolina,...

Freshwater salinization is an emerging issue for freshwater environments in the Chesapeake Bay, USA region. Salinization is often described by measurements of specific conductance (SC). This data release contains specific conductance observations collected by multiple regional agencies for streams within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This inventory compiles and harmonizes data from the Water Quality Portal (WQP), which is a data repository developed by the National Water Quality Monitoring Council and supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (NWIS). Both discrete measures of SC, which are single measures taken...

An initial reconnaissance survey in March 2016 and a subsequent survey in July 2016 was conducted to identify possible groundwater discharge points along the stream reach using a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera in seasonal extremes. The high-resolution thermal imaging camera captures the emitted infrared radiation of the objects in view. Recent studies using similar ground-based thermal infrared imaging techniques have been successful in qualitatively locating groundwater discharge along discrete features, such as fractures and faults, as well as diffuse seepage along stream banks (Deitchman and Loheide, 2009; Pandey and others, 2013). Sites of interest were those where temperature differences were observed...
This data release contains relevant datasets used in the analysis for the Chesapeake Bay stressor identification project, for which results are described in Fanelli and others (2022). For this project, two existing information sources were compiled and summarized to identify key in-stream stressors reported by the scientific literature or through regulatory assessments to be likely affecting benthic macroinvertebrate community metrics in the Chesapeake Bay region: 1) the peer reviewed multi-stressor literature, in which the effects multiple in-stream stressors on benthic macroinvertebrate community metrics are simultaneously assessed; and 2) reported causes of biological impairment as listed by state or district...

In cooperation with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), the U.S. Geological Survey prepared geospatial layers illustrating the boundaries of the regions used in the South Carolina (SC) Stream Hydrograph Methods presented in Bohman (1990,1992). The region limits were described in written text and depicted in figures in Bohman (1990, 1992), but have not been provided as geospatial layers (due to the age of the original publications). This project used best-available geospatial data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) ecoregions (2013) to create equivalent geospatial representations of the Bohman (1990, 1992) region boundaries for the SC Stream Hydrograph Methods. These layers...

These datasets were created in support of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS) for the Delaware River Basin pilot study (Eberts, Wagner, and Woodside, 2019). The NGWOS utilizes real-time data, improved computational capabilities, and new technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) to provide information on water quality and/or quantity, in more locations, quickly and efficiently (Eberts, Wagner, and Woodside, 2019). Combined with advanced modeling applications, the NGWOS will be an important tool for water-resource managers and emergency management. In this study, water-quality and bathymetric data were measured with an...
The dataset contains Esherichia coli and quantitative polymerase chain reaction data for microbial source tracking markers in the Chattahoochee River and streams within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation area from samples collected in the winter and summer of the federal fiscal years 2016 and 2017. Six water samples were collected from three sites on the Chattahoochee River each season. Eleven stream sites and one additional site on the Chattahoochee River were sampled once each season, with the exception of two sites, which were not sampled in winter FY16.

Water-withdrawal, water-use, and water-return information have been collected and compiled for each county in Georgia every 5 years since 1980 using data obtained from various Federal, State, private agencies, and on-line sources. For 2015, water use, water withdrawal, and water returns were estimated for each county in Georgia. Off-stream water use in 2015 is estimated for the categories of domestic use, commercial use, industrial use processing, mining use, irrigation use (subdivided into crop and golf course irrigation), livestock, aquaculture, and thermoelectric power cooling. Water-use trends from 1985-2015 have also been compiled for each water-planning region in Georgia.
