These data include egg mass counts and adult capture-mark-recapture histories for Foothill Yellow-legged frogs (Rana boylii) at two streams in northern California. Data were collected from the South Fork Eel River and its tributary, Fox Creek, from 1993-2019. Data from Hurdygurdy Creek were collected from 2002-2008. This code and data support the following publication: Rose, JP, Kupferberg, SJ, Wheeler, CA, Kleeman, PM, and Halstead BJ. 2021. Estimating the survival of unobservable life stages for a declining frog with a complex life history. Ecosphere. 12(2):e03381.

Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management, the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled via bottom trawl during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2023 data to...

This data release presents part of historical fisheries-dependent data for Cisco (Coregonus artedi) in Green Bay of Lake Michigan and Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron collected by scientists from U.S. Geological Survey's Great Lakes Science Center, including three tables for monthly Cisco-catch and fishing-effort data and two tables for biological data of Cisco individuals. The monthly Cisco-catch and fishing-effort data tables are for small-mesh gill-net fisheries in Green Bay and Saginaw Bay (GBSB_GN.csv), pound-net fisheries in Green Bay and Saginaw Bay (GBSB_PD.csv), and shallow trap-net fishery in Saginaw Bay (SB_ST.csv) in the period 1929–1970. The biological data of Cisco individuals are from historical Saginaw...

This dataset contains detection-nondetection data for territorial pairs of Golden Eagles at survey sites randomly selected from a grid of equal-sized (13.9 km2) hexagonal sample cells overlaid across the region of interest in Coastal Southern California during 2016 and 2017. We partitioned surveys within seasons based on approximate transition dates for stages in the breeding cycle of golden eagles in the study region: courtship (15 Dec-28 Feb), incubation (1 Mar-30 Apr), nestling (1 May-15 Jun), and the fledging-dependency period (16 June-Jul 30), totaling 4 possible sampling periods per year. This dataset also describes the proportion of land-cover types from four general categories (urban, open grassland, scrub...

The data provided were used in a mark-recapture analysis conducted in 2022. Environmental covariates included water quality and Upper Klamath Lake surface elevation. Raw data were downloaded from the USGS Oregon Water Science Center for multiple sampling sites (422622122004000_MDNL_2021-1-14.csv, 422622122004003_MDNU_2021-1-14.csv, 422042121513100_RPT_2021-1-14.csv, 422719121571400_WMR_2021-1-14.csv, MDNL_WQ2_Ammonia_2021-2-3.csv, WMR_WQ2_Ammonia_2021-2-3.csv, Elevation_2021-1-19.csv) and were formatted for use in mark-recapture models. A Program R script (Covariate_Cleaning.R) formats data and then writes multiple csv files with annual environmental covariates for use in subsequent mark-recapture models. Annual...
The data table consists of a compilation of sea otter survey results from Bering Island, Russia and select Western Aleutian Islands conducted between 1959 and 2015. The counts were reduced to sea otters per kilometer of coastline for temporal comparability. A correction factor of 3.6 was applied to aerial survey totals to yield results comparable to skiff based surveys. The data table provides the island, year, mode (aerial, skiff, or ground), and shore length covered in each survey. Counts of independent otters and pups are provided if available. Total otters counted or calculated with the correction factor and the calculated linear density are also provided.

These data are .csv files of capture data from tagged sea otters in the Santa Barbara Channel Study. Sea otters were captured using highly specialized techniques employed by a team a rebreather divers and were processed by a shore team and veterinary crew at a mobile vet lab. Overall health assessments and morphometric data were collected, and the otters received colored flipper tags (for visual identification in the field) as well as VHF radio transmitter implants (for locating and "re-sighting" individuals) and time-depth recorder instruments (for archival logging of dive records and core body temperature for individual sea otters). Fields include an individual otter identification number, capture date, general...

These data describe the spatio-temporal distribution of dabbling duck species across the continental United States during four biologically relevant seasons. This dataset contains two types of distribution models: (1) probability of presence, and (2) abundance. The model type, species, and season depicted in a raster are defined in the file name. File names begin with either abun (indicating that it is an abundance model) or prob (indicating a probability of occurrence model). Following model type is species, for which there are 10 provided: ABDU (American Black Duck), AMEW (American Wigeon), BWTE (Blue-winged Teal), CITE (Cinnamon Teal), GADW (Gadwall), AGWT (Green-winged Teal), MALL (Mallard), MODU (Mottled...

These data were compiled to help understand how climate change may impact dryland pinyon-juniper ecosystems in coming decades, and how resource management might be able to minimize those impacts. Objective(s) of our study were to model the demographic rates of PJ woodlands to estimate the areas that may decline in the future vs. those that will be stable. We quantified populations growth rates across broad geographic areas, and identified the relative roles of recruitment and mortality in driving potential future changes in population viability in 5 tree species that are major components of these dry forests. We used this demographic model to project pinyon-juniper population stability under future climate conditions,...

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is a species of ecological and economic importance in the southeastern United States. Within South Carolina, alligators are subject to private and public harvest programs, as well as nuisance removal. These management activities can have different impacts across alligator size classes that may not be apparent through widely-used monitoring techniques such as nightlight surveys. We synthesized multiple datasets within an integrated population model (IPM) to estimate size class-specific survival and abundance estimates, that would not be estimable through separate, non-integrated modeling frameworks. The IPM framework included a multistate mark-recapture-recovery...

Lake Erie Biological Station (LEBS), located in Sandusky, Ohio, is a field station of the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). LEBS is the primary federal agency for applied fisheries science excellence in Lake Erie. Since 2004, LEBS has participated in a collaborative, multiagency effort to assess forage fish populations in the western basin of Lake Erie. Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. The objectives of this survey were to provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to...

This dataset contains demographic data pertaining to Hesperocyparis forbesii on Otay Mountain in San Diego County, California, USA, over a 14-year study period from 2004 to 2017 following the 2003 Otay/Mine Fire. Site variables including elevation, incline, and slope were collected as well as pre-fire tree density and stand age for 16 study site locations. Tree density, height, and cone production was then monitored over the study period with data collection occurring in 2004, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2017. These data support the following publication: Brennan, T.J. & Keeley, J.E., 2019, Postfire population dynamics of a fire-dependent cypress, Plant Ecology, 220(6): 605. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11258-019-00939-8
