This USGS data release includes a comma separated value (CSV) file that contains 19 reach-based dam metrics representing stream fragmentation and flow alteration for nearly 2.3 million stream reaches in the conterminous United States. Dam metrics fall into three main categories: count and density, distance-based, and cumulative reservoir storage (described below). These data were developed using spatially verified large dam locations (n=49,140) primarily from the National Anthropogenic Barrier Dataset (NABD) 2012 that were spatially linked to the National Hydrography Dataset Plus version 2.1 (NHDPlusV2.1). This CSV file contains landscape factors representing anthropogenic disturbances to stream habitats summarized within local and network stream catchments as well as the downstream main channel catchment perennial and intermittent stream reaches of the five main islands of Hawai'i. The source datasets compiled and attributed to spatial units were identified as being: (1) meaningful for assessing fluvial fish habitat; (2) consistent across the entire study area in the way that they were assembled; (3) broadly representative of conditions in the past 10 years, and (4) of sufficient spatial resolution that they could be used to make valid comparisons among local catchment units. River transects were generated at 1-mile increments across select large river floodplains of the Upper Midwest, United States. These transects were created perpendicular to the river valley bottom centerline and were clipped by the floodplain boundary also generated. Transects that extended up into the valleys of connecting tributaries were not included because of spatial bias toward very large values. Inclusive features within the derived valley bottom outline such as raised plateaus were removed. The total length of these extended transects was then calculated. This metadata record documents six LiDAR point clouds, six point cloud generation reports, and three comma-delimited tables that contain information on local channel morphology and topography for a select number of reaches along Midway Branch and its associated tributaries within the confines of Fort George G. Meade, Fort Meade, Maryland. Point cloud generation reports include diagnostic information regarding errors introduced during registration and other associated processing steps. This portion of the data release presents topographic data collected at 5 study sites along Elwha River, Washington between 2006 and 2017. Elevations along channel-perpendicular transects were surveyed using a total station and prism rod. Initial geodetic control was established using static global positioning system (GPS) occupations. A total station was subsequently used to expand and maintain the survey control network at each site. This USGS data release documents presence and absences of 271 fish species in the conterminous United States for 35,918 stream reaches of the National Hydrography Dataset Plus Version2.1 (NHDPlusV2.1). Sample dates for this dataset span 1990-2019. Fish samples were aligned to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS), where each species record was assigned a Taxonomic Serial Number (TSN). The dataset is structured with records representing a stream reach (i.e. comid), sample description (i.e. source, date) and a series of 271 columns representing species where each species column is named as the TSN. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) documented the extent of flooding along a reach of the Pearl River through the metropolitan area of Jackson, Mississippi following the flood event of February 10-26, 2020. The event was a result of heavy precipitation over a 72-hour period combined with pre-existing saturated soil conditions in the upper portions of the Pearl River basin. These data provide a comprehensive survey of peak-stage indicators along the Colorado River corridor between river mile (RM) 0 and RM 87 (see Figure 1 in the associated USGS-SIR). In 2008, the locations of peak-stage indicators in three short reaches downstream from RM 87 were measured using a handheld GPS unit (see Appendix 1 in the associated USGS-SIR). This data provides river turbidity measurements collected on the Carmel River, CA. Turbidity was measured to study any changes in the Carmel River’s sediment loads following the removal of the San Clemente Dam. The USGS-run DTS-12 turbidity sensor was deployed above the Sleepy Hollow Weir on the Carmel River, CA (instrument was located at 36.445250 degrees North, 121.710494 degrees West). Deployment began on December 9, 2014. After June 16, 2016, the instrument was removed for calibration. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have recently been observed in rivers, including the Illinois River in the Midwest United States. The Illinois River Basin has a history of eutrophication issues, primarily caused by the excessive loading of nitrogen and phosphorus from urban and agricultural sources. Recent events have seen the emergence of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms in the area.
