We collected fleas from a colony of black-tailed prairie dogs on Buffalo Gap National Grassland, South Dakota, 2021. We collected flea data by combing prairie dogs and swabbing their burrows for fleas. Regarding combing, we anesthetized trapped prairie dogs (and their fleas) with isoflurane in induction chambers for processing. We combed each individual with a fine-tooth comb for 30 seconds to remove and count fleas. We released all animals, after they were recovered from anesthesia, at the location where they were captured. Regarding burrow swabbing, we used a plumber’s cable to insert a 20- by 20-centimeter flannel-cloth as deep as possible into burrow tunnels. We then shook the cable for 30 seconds to imitate...

Fire size and severity continue to increase across large parts of North America, driven by a combination of climate change and effects of human land use. Instrumental records are too short to fully understand patterns, trends, and drivers of fire that are necessary to model future fire. Tree-ring fire scars provide centuries-long records of fire regimes, including fire frequency, season, size, and fire-climate relationships. We compiled fire-scar site descriptions from > 100 researchers across the continent to produce the first North American tree-ring fire-scar network. These data provide descriptive information for all known tree-ring fire-scar sites in North America. Data fields include location, name, area and...
The sagebrush ecosystem spans over 175 million acres in the western United States, and is biologically, culturally, and economically significant to the country. Many disturbances including prolonged drought, pinyon-juniper encroachment, and cycles of invasive grasses and wildfire, pose significant threats to the resilience of the sagebrush biome. To conserve the sagebrush biome and promote community and economic sustainability, the Department of the Interior’s bureaus and offices are working together with many public and private partners to implement a “defend and grow the core” approach to conserve remaining intact sagebrush habitat and ecosystem functions, as well as restore other habitat types which are important...

We collected data on tolerance using comparative approaches in a clade of mustards, emphasizing the variety of contexts in which damage is realistically tolerated. We estimated tolerance to leaf damage, tolerance to apical clipping at the bolting stage-- simulating browsing--, and resistance to a specialist and generalist lepidopteran herbivore for a group of native mustards, grown in field soils unique to each population and in a common potting soil.

Lake Sinai Viruses (LSV) are common ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses of honey bees (Apis mellifera) that frequently reach high abundance but are not linked to overt disease. LSVs are genetically heterogeneous and collectively widespread, but despite frequent detection in surveys, the ecological and geographic factors structuring their distribution in A. mellifera are not understood. Even less is known about their distribution in other species. Better understanding of LSV prevalence and ecology have been hampered by high sequence diversity within the LSV clade. We developed a new genetic assay that detects all currently known lineages. We also performed pilot metagenetic sequencing to quantify the diversity of LSV...

We created a probabilistic classification model using the nonparametric machine learning technique 'Random Forests' for oil and gas development potential from low (0) to high (1) across the western US. The six predictor variables used in the model were: geophysical data showing aeromagnetic, isostatic gravity, and Bouguer gravity anomalies, geology, topography and bedrock depth. Our binary response variable was geospatial point data on producing and non-producing oil and gas wells. Our estimates provide insights into the trajectory and eventual endpoint of oil and gas development, but the rate and exact location of development will be subject to additional factors not considered such as market demand, the capacity...
This dataset contains morphometric information from Burmese pythons collected from an invasive population in southern Florida between 1995-2021. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park Service curated this dataset as a repository for records of Burmese pythons found on or nearby federal lands in southern Florida, including Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Biscayne National Park, and Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. As such, numerous entities actively or incidentally involved in python research or management activities contributed specimens and/or data to this dataset, including but not limited to the U.S. Geological Survey, National Park Service, U.S. Fish...
The dataset consists of genotypes (diploid base calls at variant sites) at 3,601 anonymous sites of the Arizona Toad (Anaxyrus microscaphus) nuclear genome. The genotyped samples are representative of the range of the species and its major population units, and the genotyped loci have a high degree of completeness. This data release consists of several files: 1. sample.metadata.txt, which contains sampling metadata and identifiers linking to sequence data that has been deposited in the Sequence Read Archive of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). This database is authoritative and comprehensive for sharing high-throughput sequence data produced with public funds. All NCBI-derived accessions...
INHABIT species potential distribution across the contiguous United States (ver. 3.0, February 2023)
We developed habitat suitability models for invasive plant species selected by Department of Interior land management agencies. We applied the modeling workflow developed in Young et al. 2020 to species not included in the original case studies. Our methodology balanced trade-offs between developing highly customized models for a few species versus fitting non-specific and generic models for numerous species. We developed a national library of environmental variables known to physiologically limit plant distributions (Engelstad et al. 2022 Table S1: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0263056) and relied on human input based on natural history knowledge to further narrow the variable set for each species before...
There are two datasets included in this entry. The diurnal dataset contains 28 columns of data collected during transects surveys. The nocturnal dataset contains 52 columns. We randomly select 56 sites, each 50 m in length, from 37,968 m of transects spanning the island that were originally created for bird surveys in 1982 through the cooperative efforts of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Department of Natural Resources of CNMI, and the U.S. Forest Service. For diurnal surveys, 56 transects were surveyed twice per day for 1–3 consecutive days resulting in six survey occasions. For nocturnal surveys, we surveyed 51 of the 56 transects 4 times per night for 1–3 consecutive nights resulting in 12 survey occasions....

This data bundle contains some of the inputs, all of the processing instructions and all outputs from two VisTrails/SAHM workflow. These models specifically include field data of locations with >40% cover of cheatgrass (presence) and <40% cover of cheatgrass (absence). Predictors included rasters derived from LandSat 8 imagery (_archive_FinalModel_revised) or from a digital elevation model (_archive_TopoOnly_revised). Details about all inputs are included in the associated manuscript. The three bundle documentation files in each data bundle are: 1) '_archive_bundle_metadata.xml' (this file) which contains FGDC metadata describing the archive bundle. 2) '_archive_raster_inputs.csv' a list of the raster inputs that...
This dataset includes lignin phenol monomer concentrations normalized to 100 mg of organic carbon. These analyses were conducted on select intervals from peat cores collected at the Alligator River (AR) and Great Dismal Swamp (GDS) National Wildlife Refuges in North Carolina and Virginia/North Carolina, USA, respectively. The eight lignin phenol monomers provide unique proxy information on the source, character, and state of decomposition of soil organic matter. Peat cores from the GDS were collected from three main forest communities; pocosin (POC; dominated by pond pine in the canopy and shrubs), Atlantic white cedar (AWC: called CDR to differentiate from the AR cores), and red maple-black gum (MPL). The GDS has...

We provide a collection of data reflecting estimates of soil-climate properties (moisture, temperature, and regimes) based on climate normals (1981-2010). Specifically, we provide estimates for soil moisture (monthly, seasonal, and annual), trends of spring and growing season soil moisture (Theil-Sen estimates), soil temperature and moisture regimes (STMRs; discrete classes defined by United States Department of Agriculture [USDA] Natural Resources Conservation Service [NRCS]), seasonal Thornthwaite moisture index (TMI; precipitation minus PET), and seasonality of TMI and soil moisture (30-meter rasters). Moisture values were estimated using our spatial implementation of the Newhall simulation model that relies...
Through the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), United States Geological Survey (USGS) provided technical and science support to assist in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services’ (USFWS) Species Status Assessment (“SSA”) for the northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis), little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), and tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus). USGS facilitated the SSA data call, provided data archival for repeatable and transparent analyses, provided statistical support to assess the historical, current, and future population status for each of the three species, and developed a demographic projection tool to evaluate future viability of each species under multiple threat scenarios. These data...

Daily visitor use in Rocky Mountain National Park has increased substantially since 2014, raising questions about the impact of human waste on water quality in popular areas without latrines. Human urine contributes nitrogen, and the ecological and biogeochemical effects of nitrogen from atmospheric deposition have long been the topic of study in Loch Vale watershed, Rocky Mountain National Park. Nitrogen from atmospheric deposition has been found previously to lead to lake eutrophication and altered algal species assemblages. Our data were collected to evaluate the impacts of visitors to a popular alpine watershed in Rocky Mountain National Park. There are three separate data files: soil sample locations and concentrations...
