The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Geologic Sections dataset consists of site-specific, large-scale geologic cross-sections (composite sheets). These sections were acquired from VDOT in order to save them from disposal. There are 5,500 geological profiles created for highway construction projects containing extensive core, auger and split-spoon logs at scales of 1:50 and 1:100 providing a unique record of subsurface geological and geotechnical data along roadways throughout Virginia. The thousands of feet of vertical subsurface data represents millions of dollars of investment in data acquisition by VDOT. The sections are useful as indicators of subsurface geology in large parts of Virginia. ...

The Florida Geological Survey (FGS) holds a collection of over 9,000 lithologic descriptions of cores and cuttings from boreholes throughout Florida. This includes legacy logs previously stored in a file format requiring a DOS program to decode. Paper copies of a majority of legacy lithologic logs are stored in 150 large, green loose-leaf binders collectively named “Greenbooks,” (see the Collection of Borehole and Sample Reference Documents from Florida). The legacy files represent 60% of the collection and are currently being prepared for import into the FGS’s database to be made publicly available. The remaining 40% of the collection exist in various formats (both coded and decoded), which the FGS is working to...

The Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) surface sample collection consists mostly of hand samples collected during projects involving DGGS geologists, but also includes pulps and residues. The accuracy of the sample metadata differs based on the time frame of the project that originated the samples. The DGGS projects fall in two categories: (1) legacy projects where sample locality information was not recorded systematically in either a physical or digital format and (2) recent and current projects where sample locality information has been recorded in digital databases. This collection consists of 123,808 rock samples as of 2020, though not all are accessible to the public or have location...

Paper files for 1061 entries for oil and gas well files whether drilled or not. The files are filed by: 1) dry hole or producer; 2) county; 3) operator; 4) well; 5) well file or log file. The files are copies of documents required to be turned in to the Nevada Division of Minerals, which is the main state regulatory agency for petroleum exploration. Also, the NBMG has some many files that predate 1954 when the state took over permitting. The files contain permits, sundry notices, logs, geology reports, scout cards, drill stem tests, and other items. Many of the drilled wells have cuttings that are described as a separate collection. About 670 files contain some kind of log, the electric logs of which are filed in...

The Utah Geological Survey GeoData Archive System contains Utah geologic- and wetlands-related scanned documents, photographs (except aerial), and other digital materials (resources) from our files, and those gathered from other agencies or organizations in one easy-to-use web-based system. Resources available to general users are all in the public domain and may contain reports submitted to state and local governments as part of permit reviews (and as a result are in the public domain). Metadata describing each resource is searchable, along with spatial searching for resources that are local or site-specific in nature (Geographic Search link in Simple Search pane). Resources representing counties, regional areas,...

This collection represents field station locations digitized from legacy field station maps, geologic interpretive maps, analytical reports and field notes. The points were on-screen digitized from scanned, georegistered station location maps using georegistration best practices and ESRI ArcMap software or digitized via data entry from field notes and reports. Most records indicate the geologist, field project and year collected based on the information available about the archived item or from interviews with current and former DGGS geologists and database research.

The Florida Geological Survey (FGS) maintains a collection of geologic samples from throughout Florida. This includes cuttings samples recovered from drilling in the rock below the softer surficial sediments of Florida at intervals of 5, 10 or 20 ft. The FGS cuttings collection contains both washed and unwashed samples. Clay samples can easily be washed away when processing samples, so an unwashed set is kept for all samples. Samples are stored by interval in paper sample envelopes which are then stored in cardboard boxes. The collection includes over 39,000 boxes, which each hold an average of 380 ft per box. We have an estimated 13.1 million feet of cuttings in our collection, ranging from shallow sample sets...
